How Brussels families shop for a pet urn
If you are thinking about scattering ashes, the woods and parks around Brussels hold many family memories, but they are also busy public places. A quiet corner of your own garden, a relative's land outside the city, or a biodegradable urn that can be planted with a tree are gentler options. Keeping a small portion in a keepsake before any scattering means you will not regret it later.
Belgians traditionally visit cemeteries around All Saints' Day in early November, laying chrysanthemums for family members. Some Brussels families now mark a pet's memory at the same season, lighting a candle beside an urn or placing flowers by a memorial stone at home. If you like that idea, a small engraved plaque or an urn with space for a candle fits naturally.
Most private cremation packages in Brussels already include something to bring the ashes home in, from a plain tin to a simple wooden urn. Before you buy separately, ask exactly what's included and whether the crematory will swap the standard container for an upgrade at a price difference rather than full retail. If you already own an urn, some providers will place the ashes into it for you if you drop it off in time.
About 1,209,000 people live in Brussels.
If you want to compare providers, look at Antwerp (26 miles) and Ghent (31 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Belgium thinks about cremation and urns
Local families are split between two traditions: cremation accounts for roughly 67.98%[1] of deaths in Belgium, and burial for much of the rest. A pet urn sits comfortably in either. People who lean towards burial often choose a sturdy urn they can later place in the ground or a pet cemetery; those who lean towards cremation usually keep it on display.
The Belgium percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Brussels, not as a count of pets.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for Brussels
For an outdoor memorial in Brussels, choose materials that handle both sun and frost: granite, sealed stone or outdoor-rated metal. Wood and unglazed ceramic are best kept indoors. If you'd like the ashes themselves in the garden, burying them in a biodegradable urn under a stone marker is the most weatherproof option of all.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Keepsakes are where European families in Brussels most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[5] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[6] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.

Pet ashes and the law in Brussels-Capital
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Brussels-Capital.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, rather than being handed it at reception when you're least able to think.
- Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, and allow a little room so the sealed bag slides in easily.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked and ask them to place the ashes in it before they're returned.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. A plate can be fixed to the urn a week or two later.
- Plan who will collect the urn; for a delivery, make sure someone is in to accept the parcel.
Remembering your pet, in Brussels and beyond
Space in a Brussels flat is limited, so many owners choose a compact urn that sits on a bookshelf or mantelpiece, or a small memorial stone for a balcony planter. A paw print pressed in clay before the cremation, a lock of fur in a glass locket, or a photo frame with the pet's tag are popular with city households. Ask for prints or clippings before collection.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Brussels?
The closest communities we cover are Antwerp (about 26 miles) and Ghent (about 31 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Brussels too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. We show it on the Brussels page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?
Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
Is it cheaper to buy a pet urn locally or online?
Online prices often look lower, but shipping, engraving and the risk of a breakage can close the gap. A crematory's counter price is convenient and the urn is sized to the ashes. Compare the total delivered price of the exact urn you want, engraved, rather than headline prices. The memorial budget planner helps you add it up.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[8]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
