In what order should you make urn decisions?
If you're starting from nothing, this order avoids the most common regrets:
- Size first. Cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], but take more space than that suggests. Get the capacity right before anything else.
- Then material. Decide where the urn will live and whether it might ever move, travel or go outdoors.
- Then personalization. Wording, photo and paw print, with time for a careful proof check.
- Then placement. Where it sits, how it's protected, and what goes around it.

There's no deadline on any of this. The ashes are safe in their temporary container for as long as you need, and many families take weeks or months. If that's where you are, choosing an urn when the decision can wait may be the kinder place to start.

Where do the prices and figures in these guides come from?
We use published price lists from crematories and urn sellers, national cost guides, peer-reviewed studies and industry reports, and we name the source beside every figure. For example, typical US wooden pet urns cost $30–$150[5] and ceramic ones $20–$100[6] in one retailer's cost guide; crematory price lists in the UK, Canada and Australia show similar patterns in local currency.
Where a public body or study backs a point, the guides link to it in the text, such as the TSA's rules for cremated remains in our travel advice or the FTC's consumer guide to funeral shopping on buying an urn separately. Our own sums are labelled as well: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost ~1.34×[7] the price of a full-size wooden urn at the same crematory, a reminder that small doesn't always mean cheap.

Questions people ask
What's the difference between the guides and the blog?
The guides are longer and each covers a whole decision, such as materials or personalization, from start to finish. Blog articles answer one specific question, such as what size urn a dog needs or how to fly with ashes. They link to each other, so you can start with either.
Do I need to read every guide before choosing an urn?
No. If you only have time for one, start with the guide on ash volume and containers, or simply use the urn size calculator. Getting the capacity right is the most important decision; material, engraving and placement are easier to change later.
Are the prices in these guides up to date?
They come from published sources, which we name next to each figure and review regularly. Prices change and vary by seller and country, so treat them as typical ranges rather than quotes. A seller's current listing is always the final word.
Do you sell urns yourselves?
