Pet urn polls: add your voice, see how others decided

Why we ask

Why we ask these questions at all

Choosing an urn is a private decision, usually made alone at a kitchen table. There's little to compare against: you rarely see what friends chose, and few people talk about where the urn ended up or whether it fit. Our polls are a small way to make that less lonely. Each question takes one click, and afterwards you can see how everyone else has answered so far. If you're wondering how much ash there will be to share, a study of 100 cremations found human cremated remains weigh about 3.5% of body weight, and pets are broadly similar.

They also help us write better guides. If lots of readers say the ashes are still in the temporary box, or that sizing worries them most, that's a sign to explain those topics more clearly. The browser below shows every urn poll; pick any that apply to you.

How to read them

How to read the results without over-reading them

Poll results are live counts from readers of this site, one vote per person per question. They show what people who visit an urn guide chose or would choose, which is not the same as what all pet owners do. Treat them as a conversation, not a statistic.

Where published research exists, we put it beside the polls so you can compare. About 56%[2] of pet owners choose some form of memorial service, according to one market report, and interest in personalized memorials is high too (figures below). If our readers lean differently, that's interesting, but it doesn't overturn the research. See the live results page for how we count.

Published research gives useful anchors. The RSPCA's pet bereavement survey of more than 4,000 owners found almost all saw their pet as family, and a summary of NFDA's 2025 consumer research[3] shows how many people now plan to keep ashes at home. Our own numbers add another angle: by our estimate, about 765,000 US families a year[4] are likely open to a personalized pet keepsake, which is why so many of our questions ask about engraving and sharing.

Choosing

What the material and budget questions reveal

The material poll asks what you'd pick today. It's revealing because each answer implies a different life for the urn: hardwood for a family room, stone for something permanent, biodegradable for a burial later. If you're torn, the urn materials guide sets out the practical differences.

The budget poll includes an honest option: "I have no idea what urns cost." That's a common place to start, since urns are something most people buy once or twice in a lifetime. One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about USD 50–1,000+[6], and the memorial budget planner helps you set a figure that feels right.

Afterwards

Questions about sharing ashes and where the urn lives

Two polls look at what happens once the urn is home. One asks whether the ashes stay together or are shared between people; the other asks where the urn sits. Keeping ashes at home is widespread: in a summary of NFDA's 2025 research on human cremation, 37%[3] of people said they'd keep remains at home in an urn.

If sharing sounds right for your family, the ashes sharing planner shows how far one pet's ashes go. For ideas on placement, read placing and caring for a pet urn at home.

Timing and touches

When people buy the urn, and what makes it theirs

One of the questions we find most useful asks when you bought, or would buy, the urn. Some families send an urn to the crematory so the ashes come home in it. Others take whatever the package includes, and many wait weeks or months with the ashes in a plain box on a shelf. The answer options are deliberately broad, because every one of those paths is normal.

When did you (or would you) buy the urn?

The personalization poll asks which single touch matters most: a name, a photo, dates and a few words, a figurine likeness, or nothing at all. Plain urns are a genuine preference, not a budget compromise, and they're included for that reason. If you're leaning toward engraving or a photo, the guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains how long each takes and how proofs work, so the urn arrives when you need it.

Ordering

The worries people have when ordering an urn

Ordering something so personal online brings its own anxieties: the wrong size, a spelling mistake, a crack in transit, a delay. Our worry poll asks which one weighs on you most. Whatever you choose, each has a practical fix, from checking capacity in cubic inches to reading a proof aloud before approving it.

The transfer poll covers a question few people expect: how the ashes get from the temporary container into the urn. Our urn order checklist covers that and the other steps between choosing and delivery. Global market reports value cremation urns at about USD 2.1 billion[7], so there's no shortage of choice; the checklist helps you filter it.

Questions people ask

Are the urn polls anonymous?

Yes. We don't ask for your name or email to vote, and results are only shown as totals. The site remembers that your browser has voted so the same person isn't counted twice, but that isn't linked to anything you send through our request form.

Can I change my vote?

Each poll counts one vote per person, and the choice you make is the one we record. If your situation changes, such as moving the urn to a new spot, that's perfectly normal; the polls are a snapshot of how people feel at the time they answer, not a permanent record.

Why aren't the results shown as facts on your other pages?

Because they're not a scientific sample. Readers of an urn guide are already thinking about urns, so their answers lean in particular directions. We use published research for facts and show poll results separately, clearly labelled as live reader votes.

Can I suggest a new poll question?

Please do. Use the contact form and tell us the question you wish you'd been able to ask other owners when you were choosing. We add new polls when a question comes up often enough to be useful to others.
