Why plan
Why a budget helps when you're choosing an urn
Costs after a pet dies arrive one at a time: the vet's bill, the cremation, then an urn that's lovely but more than you expected, then engraving and shipping. Seeing them together, before you commit to any of them, makes decisions calmer. It also shows where your money matters most to you.
Worrying about cost is common and nothing to be embarrassed by. A clear total lets you choose an urn you love without the nagging sense that something else will have to give.

Using the planner
How to use the memorial budget planner
- Pick your currency: US, Canadian or Australian dollars, or British pounds. The starting amounts stay US figures and aren't converted, so swap in local prices.
- Check the items you're planning. Private cremation and an urn are ticked to start; add euthanasia, pickup, jewelry, a memorial stone, a paw print, a farewell or a memorial tree as needed.
- Adjust the low and high figures if you already have a quote or a particular urn in mind.
- Copy or print the plan to share with family or keep beside the phone when you call providers.
The total updates as you go and nothing is stored. Treat the defaults as a starting point; the moment you have a real quote, type it in.
Where the figures come from
Where the starting figures come from
The planner adds the low figures of every ticked item for the bottom of your range, and the high figures for the top. The veterinary and cremation defaults come from a national US cost study: private dog cremation typically runs $206 to $473[1] around an average of $260[1], and euthanasia averages $139[3] in a clinic and $410[4] at home.
$260[1]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).
$139[3]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for in-clinic dog euthanasia at $139 (range $110-$253).
$410[4]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for at-home dog euthanasia at $410 (range $325-$747).
For the big picture, by our estimate a typical US dog end-of-life bill is about $670 with at-home euthanasia plus private cremation, or about $399 with clinic euthanasia[5], before any urn. In the UK, the competition regulator's final report on vet services found owners may be paying in the order of £100 more than they should for individual cremations, and practices must now set out their cremation prices, which is worth mentioning when you ask for a quote.
Everything else, including the urn, uses a broad placeholder range that is labelled "typical" in the tool rather than a sourced figure, so replace it with a real price as soon as you have one. For reference, wooden pet urns usually cost $30–$150[6] and marble or stone ones $80–$300[7] (per one large retailer). One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about USD 50–1,000+[8], so if you have a marble urn or a custom figurine in mind, raise the high figure to match.
Worked example
A worked example: a spaniel, an engraved urn and a paw print
Say your 35 lb spaniel is euthanized at the clinic, followed by a private cremation. You'd like a solid wood urn with their name engraved, and a clay paw print. Check those four items and the planner shows roughly $391 to $1,101 with the default ranges.
Now refine it. The cremation quote from your vet comes in at $240, and the urn you like is $95 with engraving. Put those in as both low and high. The range tightens to around $470 to $663, with most of the remaining spread in the euthanasia fee and the paw print. That's a figure you can plan around.

Cats usually cost a little less. The same national study gave these averages for cats: clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[9]. Lower the cremation line if that's your situation.
Saving without regret
Where the money goes, and where you can save
The cremation and any home visit are usually the largest items. The urn is the most flexible. A few ways to keep the urn side in check without it feeling like a compromise:
- Decline the package urn if you'd rather choose your own; ask for the ashes in the temporary container instead.
- Choose a frame over a printed photo. A picture-frame urn lets you use any photo, with no proof fee or wait; our guide to engraving and photo lead times compares the two.
- Pick solid wood over stone. It's lighter to ship and usually cheaper in the same capacity.
- Buy a stock design and personalize it rather than commissioning a custom piece.
- Ask the crematory to divide keepsake portions if you need them, rather than buying a separate sharing kit.
In the US, the FTC's funeral shopping guide is written for human funerals, but its core advice carries over: ask for itemized prices and remember you can buy the urn separately. Our pet urn materials guide shows which materials give the most for the money, and choosing an urn before you need it explains how to spread the decisions out.
Some pet insurance add-ons help too. Embrace's Wellness Rewards add-on, for example, could reimburse up to $650[10] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Check your own policy before you pay. For more on choosing without overspending, read choosing an urn when the design decision can wait.

Limits
What the planner can't tell you
It can't give you a local quote. Prices vary a great deal by city and state, and after-hours or weekend fees can add a lot. The defaults are national figures for dogs; smaller pets, other countries and very large dogs will differ. It also doesn't know about shipping, which for a heavy stone urn or an international order can be significant.
Use it for the shape of your budget, then fill in real numbers as they arrive. Our urn order checklist lists the fees worth asking about before you pay.

Questions people ask
How much should I budget for a pet urn?
A retailer's price guide puts wooden pet urns at $30–$150[6] and ceramic ones at $20–$100[11], while one industry report says personalized urns range from about USD 50–1,000+[8]. Decide what matters most, whether that's material, a photo, engraving or a likeness, and put your money there. A simple urn chosen with care is every bit as meaningful as an expensive one.
Does pet insurance pay for an urn?
Standard policies usually don't cover cremation or memorial items, but some optional add-ons do. Some US add-ons have reimbursed a few hundred dollars toward cremation, burial or keepsakes. Check the wording of your own policy, and keep receipts for the urn and any engraving in case you can claim.
Is it cheaper to buy the urn from the crematory?
Not necessarily. A package urn can be good value, but it may be a basic design you'd later replace. Ask what the package costs with and without the urn. If the difference is small, it may be worth keeping as a spare or for scattering later.
Can I use the planner for a cat or a rabbit?
Yes. The default cremation range is based on US dog prices, so lower it for smaller pets. A US study put the average cat cremation at around $180[9]. Rabbits and other small pets often cost less again. Enter any quote you have and the total adjusts instantly.
