Get your pet's urn right the first time with this fit worksheet
A 12 lb cat returns about 6.7 oz[1] of ashes, and a large dog several pounds, so fit matters. This worksheet records the measurements and details that keep an urn from arriving too small, too tall or misspelled.
- Six measurements that prevent returns
- Compare two quotes including delivery
- Download it to send with your order

What should I record before contacting the team?
Pet Urns & Keepsakes uses this worksheet to prepare worldwide inquiries. Your entries stay in this page’s memory until you copy, download or open an email draft. Reloading clears the fields. Record the requested outcome and location, leaving unresolved choices as questions and sensitive medical or personal details out of a shared copy.
0 of 6 fields have an entry. This is a completion count, not a safety score or booking approval.
How do I compare two itemized quotes?
Pet Urns & Keepsakes compares your entered amounts for worldwide inquiries; it does not supply market prices. Use two written quotes in one currency, counting each charge once. Leave unknown amounts blank and use zero only for confirmed inclusions or no charge. Put taxes and other separate charges in the final row.
The tool adds your entries. It does not estimate prices, recommend a provider or establish that two service definitions are equivalent.

How can I keep and share my planning record?
Pet Urns & Keepsakes lets you keep this worldwide planning record with your answers, selected source and entered quote amounts. Copying or downloading creates a copy you control. Opening an email draft lets you review the text in your email app before sending; none of these actions automatically submits an inquiry.
Clear entries removes all worksheet fields, including quote amounts and currency. It does not delete a copy you already saved or an email draft.

Why it helps
Why a few measurements save a lot of heartache
Ordering an urn often happens in the days after a loss, when it's hard to think about millimeters and fonts. Yet the most common urn problems are practical: the ashes bag won't fit through the opening, the urn is too tall for the shelf, or a name is spelled wrong on a piece that can't be re-engraved.
A written specification solves those problems before production starts. It also makes quotes comparable: when two sellers describe capacity differently, you can hold both against the same numbers. And if you're buying ahead of time, it lets you shop calmly, which is how many families prefer to do it.
Urns are also harder to return than most things you buy online. Engraved pieces are made for one pet and usually can't be resold, and some sellers won't accept returns on personalized items at all. A few minutes with a tape measure is the cheapest insurance you'll find.
Finally, the worksheet gives everyone in the family a say without a long discussion. One person can measure the shelf, another can choose the wording, and the finished sheet shows what was agreed. That shared record often matters more than it sounds when feelings are raw.
Filling it in
How to fill in each field
At the top, choose your country and add your city or region so delivery options make sense; a street address isn't needed. Then complete the six fields. A tape measure, a kitchen scale and ten minutes are all you need.
- Actual capacity required. Start with one cubic inch per pound of healthy weight, then add a little. If ashes will be shared, subtract the portion going elsewhere.
- Internal dimensions and opening. Sellers list outside size first. Ask for inside height, width and the diameter of the opening, top or bottom.
- Bag or liner dimensions. Measure the sealed bag the ashes came in. If it won't fit through the opening, you'll need to pour.
- Display shelf dimensions. Record width, depth and height clearance of the shelf, mantel or niche, including any lip or door.
- Closure method. Threaded lid, screw-in base plate, sliding panel or sealed. Note if you'd like to add something later, such as a collar.
- Final engraving proof. Paste the exact wording, dates and font. Mark it approved only after two people have checked it.

Comparing prices
Comparing two urn quotes fairly
The quote table has rows for material, capacity and construction, personalization and delivery, plus taxes and other charges. Enter numbers from written quotes in one currency. The worksheet totals each column and shows the difference only when every row has a figure; it doesn't suggest prices.
Personalization is where totals drift. Name-only engraving typically adds $15–$25[3], and photo engraving $40–$100[4] (per one large retailer). Small urns aren't always cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost ~1.34×[5] the price of a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory. The memorial budget planner helps set a total before you shop.

Next steps
Sending your specification to a seller
Copy the specification, download it as a text file or open an email draft. Nothing is sent until you send it. Attaching the downloaded file to an order email gives the seller everything in one place and gives you a record if something arrives wrong.
If the urn is being delivered with ashes inside, check the carrier's rules first: an empty urn and a filled urn are different shipping situations. For help finding urns that match your measurements, use the form at the top, and we'll reply by email. Browse the options we help with on the services page.
Will a relative fly with the filled urn? The TSA's guidance on cremated remains asks for a container that X-rays clearly, so note the material in your specification. And if a seller quotes milliliters, the NIST conversion tables give the exact factor for the worksheet: one cubic inch is 16.387 mL.

Good to know
Practical advice for choosing and filling an urn
- Use healthy weight, not final weight. Illness often brings weight loss; size for the pet you remember.
- Allow for lead times. Ashes often return in about 5-10 days[6] (per one urn retailer's guide); an engraved urn may take longer, and that's fine.
- Think about sharing early. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Check the material for the room. Wood near a radiator or ceramic on a busy table may not last.
- Decide who fills it. Some families do it together; others ask a crematory or funeral home.

Questions people ask
Is my urn worksheet saved online?
No. Entries stay in the open page and clear when you reload. Copy, download or email the specification to keep it. We only see what you choose to send.
What if I don't know my pet's exact weight?
Use your vet's last recorded healthy weight, or a typical adult weight for the breed. Then round up by 10 to 20% to leave room. You can also ask the crematory how much the ashes weigh when you collect them.
Why measure the ashes bag?
Because many urns have openings smaller than the bag the ashes come in. If the bag fits, you can place it in whole with no pouring. If it doesn't, you'll need a funnel and a calm moment, or someone to help.
Should I approve an engraving proof by email?
Yes, but don't rush it. Check spelling, dates, spacing and font, ideally with someone else. Paste the approved text into the proof field so you have a copy of exactly what you agreed.
Can I use the worksheet for keepsake urns too?
Yes. Fill in one worksheet per container, noting the portion each will hold. For very small keepsakes, the opening and closure details matter most, since a tiny screw cap or sealed chamber can be fiddly to fill at home.
