Pet Urns in Flanders: what to know
In Flanders, as elsewhere, the urn is often the memorial families keep longest, sometimes for decades. That's a good reason not to rush it. Choose a material you'll still like in ten years, a lid that closes securely and a size close to the ashes you have. If you'd like a second opinion, send us your pet's details and we'll email some options.
Across Flanders, two things shape the urn you choose more than anything else: where it will live and how far it has to travel. Apartment dwellers in the cities tend to pick compact urns with secure lids; families on larger properties often split the ashes between an indoor urn and a garden burial. Distance matters for delivery, especially for fragile ceramic and glass.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
The cremation rate in Flanders sits at about 67.98%[1]. Where habits are mixed like this, it's common for one person in a household to want the ashes on a shelf and another to feel uneasy about it. A closed wooden box that doesn't look like an urn, or a keepsake kept in a drawer, is a fair compromise while everyone gets used to the idea.
That Flanders rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
How much to budget for an urn
Urns in Belgium are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.
Prices for pet urns in Belgium vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[3], so always ask whether the price quoted in Flanders includes personalization.
| Urn | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket | £61–£151[2] | United Kingdom |
| Wooden pet urn | $30–$150[4] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[5] | United States |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[6] | United States |

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Flanders covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares first, and fill the main urn with what remains; the ashes sharing planner works out each person's portion.
- Buy matching keepsakes for relatives in other cities, and hand them over in person where you can.
- If you must post ashes, read your carrier's rules before packing. USPS is the only US service that takes them, and only via Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn once you know what's left, sized for that amount.
- Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.
Ways to remember your pet at home
If you'd like part of your pet's ashes outdoors, a quiet corner of your own garden, a favorite walking route (with permission where needed) or a pet cemetery are the usual choices around Flanders. Keeping most of the ashes in an urn at home while scattering a little means you never have to choose between the two.

Questions people ask
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Flanders?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Flanders?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Flanders?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Flanders?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Do crematories in Flanders sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
How much does a pet urn cost in Flanders?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[2]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
