Before you scatter or bury in Alberta
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Alberta follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
City of Calgary publishes Calgary's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
In Canada, many pet crematories publish their urn prices in Canadian dollars, which makes comparison easier. Ordering from a US website can add duties, brokerage fees and delays, and a broken ceramic urn is hard to return across the border. Winter weather can also slow deliveries, so order engraved urns early if you're planning a spring burial or scattering.

How to get from ashes to urn
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.

- Size each urn for one pet; a shared companion urn only makes sense once both sets of ashes are home.
- Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
- Leave shelf space next to the first urn, so that adding another later doesn't mean moving everything around.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, in an envelope taped underneath or kept together in a drawer.

Why does the Calgary page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) reports about 81.1%[1] of Canada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
Where in the house should a pet urn go?
A shelf in a room you use daily, shaded from strong sunlight, with no radiator, heater or steamy kitchen or bathroom close by. Put it high enough that pets and small children can't knock it down, on a surface that doesn't wobble. Many families choose a spot they pass every day; others prefer somewhere private, like a bedroom. Either is right if it feels right to you.
Can I move my pet's ashes into the urn myself?
Yes, and it's usually simpler than people fear. Most ashes come back in a sealed plastic bag, which you can lift out and place straight into the urn. If the bag won't fit through the opening, work over a tray indoors, away from drafts, and use a spoon or wide funnel. Some crematories will transfer the ashes for you if you drop the urn off.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park near Calgary?
Often you can, but parks set their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths, playgrounds and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and leave nothing behind. If you're unsure, check with the parks department or scatter on private land with the owner's agreement.
Can I take my pet's urn on a plane?
Usually yes, in your hand luggage, but the container needs to pass through airport X-ray screening. Dense metal or stone urns can be hard to screen, and in the US, security officers won't open a container of remains. Wood or a sturdy plastic temporary container is the safest choice for travel. Check your airline's rules too, especially for international flights.
