Pet Urns in Hong Kong: what to know
Buying a pet urn in Hong Kong is easier than it used to be, with crematory ranges, online sellers and independent makers all delivering nationwide. The trade-offs are delivery time and the risk of damage in transit. Solid wood and metal travel best; ceramic and glass need careful packing.
Families in Hong Kong are often surprised that the ashes return quickly, while the urn they want takes longer than hoped. That gap is normal. The temporary container is made to hold the ashes safely for as long as needed, so use the wait to choose calmly rather than settling for whatever happens to be in stock.

How Hong Kong thinks about cremation and urns
In Hong Kong, about 96.96%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.
The cremation figure for Hong Kong comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What families in Hong Kong typically pay for an urn
Plenty of households in Hong Kong pay for two containers rather than one: a niche-sized urn for a columbarium and a small keepsake for the home altar. Budget for both from the start. We don't have local price lists to cite, so as a relative guide only: in the US, photo urns cost $40–$150[2] and keepsake or mini urns $15–$60[3]. Ask your crematorium whether a matching pair is sold together.
If you're ordering an urn from overseas for delivery to Hong Kong, add shipping, duties and the risk of breakage to the price. A locally made urn, or one from your pet crematorium, avoids most of that. For a sense of how materials compare, US guides put ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[4] and marble or stone at $80–$300[5].

Before you scatter or bury in Hong Kong
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, small flats mean many families choose a compact urn or keep the ashes in a pet columbarium niche. Pet crematoria usually offer both, often as part of a package. If you'd like an urn at home, measure your shelf or altar space first, and choose a secure lid if you have other pets or children.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, where possible: a lock of fur or their collar might become part of a keepsake down the line.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
- Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.
Ways to remember your pet at home
For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

Questions people ask
Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Hong Kong?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Hong Kong and winter lows near °F in Hong Kong, the right choice depends on where you are.
Do crematories in Hong Kong sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
What should I ask a crematory in Hong Kong about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Hong Kong choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
How many communities do you cover in Hong Kong?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 2 communities in Hong Kong, including Hong Kong and Kowloon. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Hong Kong?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
