Choosing a pet urn in Bangalore
Bangalore's lakes, gardens and tree-lined parks are part of how people here spend time outdoors, and some owners picture planting a tree in memory of a pet. A biodegradable urn in a garden, or a plant on a large balcony, can work well. Public parks and lakes have their own rules, so check before scattering or planting anything there. A private garden or family land is usually simpler.
Many Bangalore residents moved here for work from other states or countries, and a pet's ashes often travel home with them, to a family garden, a river or a place they visited together. If you might move, choose a memorial that travels well: a small urn, a keepsake with a little ash, a paw print. Ask whether the ashes can be divided if relatives elsewhere want to keep some.
Most private cremation packages in Bangalore already include something to bring the ashes home in, from a plain tin to a simple wooden urn. Before you buy separately, ask exactly what's included and whether the crematory will swap the standard container for an upgrade at a price difference rather than full retail. If you already own an urn, some providers will place the ashes into it for you if you drop it off in time.
Bangalore's population is around 8,443,000.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
Cremation is now the mainstream choice in India, where about 80%[1] of people are cremated. In places like this, the urn has become the main memorial for many families, taking the place a headstone once held. That's worth remembering when you choose one for a pet: it may be on a shelf for twenty years, so pick something you'll still like, rather than something that only suits this week.
We take the India rate from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Bangalore, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Bangalore's climate
Local weather also affects deliveries. Storms, extreme heat and holiday rushes can all add days to an urn's journey, and fragile ceramic or glass travels best in mild weather. If a date matters, order early and ask the seller for the making time and shipping time separately. Your provider in Bangalore can tell you what they'd recommend at this time of year.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Bangalore
Plenty of households in Bangalore pay for two containers rather than one: a niche-sized urn for a columbarium and a small keepsake for the home altar. Budget for both from the start. We don't have local price lists to cite, so as a relative guide only: in the US, photo urns cost $40–$150[5] and keepsake or mini urns $15–$60[6]. Ask your crematorium whether a matching pair is sold together.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Karnataka: Karnataka costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
If you rent in Bangalore, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Karnataka; your city or county has the final word.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Bring the ashes home as they are. The temporary container is sealed and safe; there's no deadline for moving them.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. A partner, a child away at college, a parent in another state: decide before buying anything.
- Work out the capacity you need. The rule of thumb is one cubic inch for every pound your pet weighed when well; the urn size calculator does the sum for you.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof of any engraving, and check the spelling of your pet's name twice.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag straight into the urn, or ask the crematory to do it for you.
Remembering your pet, in Bangalore and beyond
In a Bangalore apartment, a memorial usually needs to be compact: a photo with a small container on a shelf, a pendant or ring, a memorial stone for a balcony. Some families light a lamp and say a prayer on the anniversary; others prefer a quiet photo book. Whatever you choose, there's no rush; the ashes can wait until you're ready to decide.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in India?
For people, yes: about 80%[1] of India deaths end in cremation, according to Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bangalore follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
How do I stop a delivered urn from going missing in my building?
Ask the seller to require a signature, have it sent to your workplace or choose a local pickup point. If your building has a package room, let the front desk know a fragile item is coming. Open the box the same day and report any damage straight away, since most sellers set a short window for claims.
Can I take my pet's urn on a plane?
Usually yes, in your hand luggage, but the container needs to pass through airport X-ray screening. Dense metal or stone urns can be hard to screen, and in the US, security officers won't open a container of remains. Wood or a sturdy plastic temporary container is the safest choice for travel. Check your airline's rules too, especially for international flights.
What urn suits a small apartment in Bangalore?
A compact box or a small round metal urn that screws shut usually works in tight spaces, since both fit on a bookshelf and are hard to knock over. Measure the shelf depth and the height between shelves before buying. If a cat climbs the shelves, a small pad of museum putty under the base keeps the urn in place without marking the wood.
