Pet urns in Mumbai: the local picture
Space in a Mumbai flat is precious, so a memorial usually needs to be small: a photo and a little urn on a shelf, a pendant or ring with a little ash, or a framed paw print. Many families light a lamp or say a prayer beside it. Choose something you'll be happy to see every day rather than something large.
Mumbai is home to people from many faiths and every part of India, and memorial customs reflect that. Some families mark a pet's death with rituals similar to those for people; others prefer a photo book, a donation to an animal shelter or feeding street animals in the pet's name. If relatives elsewhere want to share in the memorial, ask whether the ashes can be divided.
Timing works a little differently in a big city. Crematories here often return ashes within days, so if you order an engraved urn afterwards, the ashes may sit in their temporary container for a few weeks while the urn is made. That's fine. If a date matters, such as a memorial gathering, some families have the urn delivered straight to the crematory so the ashes come home in it.

Why urns are common in India
In India, about 80%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.

Keeping an urn safe through Mumbai's seasons
If you plan to bury or scatter the ashes, the season in Mumbai decides when, not whether. Frozen or waterlogged ground can wait; the ashes are safe indoors in the meantime. Many families find a spring or autumn date, when the weather is kind and people can gather without rushing, and keep a small keepsake back for those who can't come.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
If you're ordering an urn from overseas for delivery to Mumbai, add shipping, duties and the risk of breakage to the price. A locally made urn, or one from your pet crematorium, avoids most of that. For a sense of how materials compare, US guides put ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[2] and marble or stone at $80–$300[5].

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Maharashtra
Most families never need to think about rules at all: the urn stays at home, and that's allowed everywhere. If you'd like to scatter or bury some of the ashes in or around Mumbai, a quick check with the landowner or the park authority avoids awkward moments. Here's a summary for Maharashtra.
From temporary container to urn
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home and what they'll look like: a sealed bag in a plain box or tin.
- Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own to keep in their bedroom, with the main urn living somewhere the whole family uses.
- Invite them to add something, perhaps a picture they drew or a few words, slipped beneath the urn.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, especially if the urn will sit within reach of small hands.
- Mark the day the urn arrives with a moment together, such as lighting a candle or telling a favorite story.
Keeping your pet close in Mumbai
The sea is part of Mumbai life, and some families immerse a pet's ashes in the sea or a river, as they might for a relative. If that's your plan, consider keeping a small share in a keepsake at home. Ask about any rules for the spot you have in mind. Families with access to a garden or a village home might plant a tree or bury a biodegradable urn instead.

Questions people ask
How do India attitudes to cremation compare?
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) puts the India human cremation rate at about 80%[1]. We show it on the Mumbai page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
Where in the house should a pet urn go?
A shelf in a room you use daily, shaded from strong sunlight, with no radiator, heater or steamy kitchen or bathroom close by. Put it high enough that pets and small children can't knock it down, on a surface that doesn't wobble. Many families choose a spot they pass every day; others prefer somewhere private, like a bedroom. Either is right if it feels right to you.
Can I take my pet's urn on a plane?
Usually yes, in your hand luggage, but the container needs to pass through airport X-ray screening. Dense metal or stone urns can be hard to screen, and in the US, security officers won't open a container of remains. Wood or a sturdy plastic temporary container is the safest choice for travel. Check your airline's rules too, especially for international flights.
Can I see pet urns in person in Mumbai before buying?
Usually yes. Many pet crematories in a city the size of Mumbai keep display cabinets, and some memorial suppliers and craft studios have showrooms. Handling an urn tells you its real weight, finish and how the lid works. Call ahead to ask what's on display, and bring your pet's weight so you can check capacity on the spot.
