Pet Urns in Kanagawa: what to know
Urn choice in Kanagawa also depends on how the ashes come back. Most crematories return them as fine, pale grit in a sealed bag, sized roughly in proportion to your pet's weight. The standard rule of one cubic inch of urn space per pound of healthy weight works well almost everywhere, and the urn size calculator does the arithmetic.
A useful way to use the Kanagawa pages is to start with your own town, then look at the largest city nearby. The town page tells you what's typical where you live: how urns reach you and what the weather means for an outdoor memorial. The larger city's page shows what's within a day's drive, such as showrooms, stone workshops and makers who take commissions.

Why urns are common in Kanagawa
In Kanagawa, about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Kanagawa rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What pet urns cost in Kanagawa
In much of Asia, small apartments shape the urn choice more than price does. A compact urn or a keepsake on a home altar is common, and many pet crematoria sell urns designed for columbarium niches. We don't yet have sourced local urn prices, so the table shows US material prices for relative comparison: marble costs about three times as much as ceramic[2].
Published pet urn prices in Asia are hard to find, so we won't invent a local range for Kanagawa. Many families here keep ashes in a columbarium niche instead of, or as well as, an urn at home. At one Singapore pet columbarium, niches start at SGD 300 for the first year with SGD 180 yearly renewal[3]. The niche size limits the urn, so check its dimensions before you buy.
| Item | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Columbarium niche for pet ashes | SGD 300 first year, SGD 180 a year after | Singapore |
| Ceramic pet urn | $20–$100[4] | United States |
| Metal pet urn | $40–$200[5] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[6] | United States |

Pet ashes and the law in Kanagawa
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Kanagawa.
In Japan, many pet crematoria follow the human custom of returning remains as bone fragments, which the family places into the urn together, sometimes with chopsticks. That needs a larger urn than finely processed ash. Families often keep the urn at a home altar for a while, then place it in a pet cemetery's ossuary. Ask how remains will be returned before buying an urn.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. Answer that and roughly half of what's on sale drops off the list.
- For display, pick something whose finish works with the room's light and decor, in a capacity that matches the ashes closely.
- For burial, choose a biodegradable urn or a sealed box, and check with the landowner or Kanagawa rules first.
- For travel, a wooden urn or another robust container that X-ray can see through is the safe pick, kept in your carry-on.
- Order engraving with a written proof; expect a longer wait for photographs or bespoke designs.

Ways to remember your pet at home
Keepsakes are how families spread across different cities share one pet. A matching set of small urns, a pendant that holds a pinch of ashes or a glass bead made with a little of them can each travel with a different person. The jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet's ashes can fill.

Questions people ask
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Kanagawa?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Which places in Kanagawa have the widest choice of pet urns?
Usually the largest cities, such as Yokohama and Kawasaki, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.
Do crematories in Kanagawa sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
What should I ask a crematory in Kanagawa about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Kanagawa?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Kanagawa?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
