Pet urns in Kyoto: the local picture
On the night of 16 August, bonfires are lit on the mountains around Kyoto to send the spirits of the dead back at the end of Obon, and many families think of lost pets as well. A quiet evening with the pet's photo, a candle and a memorial stone or urn nearby can be a way to mark it. Obon and the equinox weeks are common times for temple memorial visits.
Kyoto's crafts, from ceramics to lacquer and woodwork, give families unusual choices for a memorial: a hand-thrown urn, a small lacquered box for a keepsake, a carved nameplate. Before choosing, think about where it will sit and how much space you have in a townhouse or apartment. Ask the provider for paw prints or a lock of fur before cremation, because they cannot be taken afterwards.
Kyoto is home to families from many traditions, and urns reflect that. Some households set up a small home altar with a photo, candle and urn; some prefer a niche in a pet cemetery columbarium; others keep a little and scatter the rest by water. There's no local rule about which is right. The practical questions are the same for all of them: the size you need, how the urn closes and how long it takes to make.
Kyoto's population is around 1,475,000.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Nara (23 miles), Osaka (27 miles) and Kobe (39 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation in Japan, and what it means for urns
When cremation covers around 99.97%[1] of deaths, as it does in Japan, ashes stop being an awkward subject at the dinner table. That openness helps with a pet. Relatives are more likely to ask for a small share, and friends may already know a potter or an engraver. Tell people you're choosing an urn; the most useful leads often come from someone who did it recently.

Heat, cold and damp: materials for Kyoto
If you plan to bury or scatter the ashes, the season in Kyoto decides when, not whether. Frozen or waterlogged ground can wait; the ashes are safe indoors in the meantime. Many families find a spring or autumn date, when the weather is kind and people can gather without rushing, and keep a small keepsake back for those who can't come.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
In much of Asia, small apartments shape the urn choice more than price does. A compact urn or a keepsake on a home altar is common, and many pet crematoria sell urns designed for columbarium niches. We don't yet have sourced local urn prices, so the table shows US material prices for relative comparison: marble costs about three times as much as ceramic[5].

Pet ashes and the law in Japan
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Japan.
In Japan, many pet crematoria follow the human custom of returning remains as bone fragments, which the family places into the urn together, sometimes with chopsticks. That needs a larger urn than finely processed ash. Families often keep the urn at a home altar for a while, then place it in a pet cemetery's ossuary. Ask how remains will be returned before buying an urn.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
- Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
- Shortlist two or three urns whose listing gives a real volume figure in cubic inches or litres rather than a vague size word.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, as both figures count when you have a day in mind.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives, so any chip or dent gets reported without delay.
- Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.
Ways to remember your pet at home
Kyoto families often keep a pet's ashes at home for a time on a small altar with a photograph, incense and flowers. Some move the ashes later to a temple's shared pet grave, where services are held on set days; others keep them at home for good or divide them between the two. Pendants, small keepsake urns and framed paw prints are all options if you want part of your pet close.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kyoto follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Kyoto?
The closest communities we cover are Nara (about 23 miles), Osaka (about 27 miles) and Kobe (about 39 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Kyoto too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Japan?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?
Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Kyoto wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
Can I see pet urns in person in Kyoto before buying?
Usually yes. Many pet crematories in a city the size of Kyoto keep display cabinets, and some memorial suppliers and craft studios have showrooms. Handling an urn tells you its real weight, finish and how the lid works. Call ahead to ask what's on display, and bring your pet's weight so you can check capacity on the spot.
