Cremation is now the mainstream choice in Japan, where about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated. In places like this, the urn has become the main memorial for many families, taking the place a headstone once held. That's worth remembering when you choose one for a pet: it may be on a shelf for twenty years, so pick something you'll still like, rather than something that only suits this week.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
If you'd like to bury the urn itself, the material matters for more than looks. A biodegradable urn breaks down within a few seasons, while metal, resin or sealed hardwood stays intact for years, which some cemeteries and landowners prefer and others don't accept. Check before you order. The notes below summarize Japan.
In Japan, many pet crematoria follow the human custom of returning remains as bone fragments, which the family places into the urn together, sometimes with chopsticks. That needs a larger urn than finely processed ash. Families often keep the urn at a home altar for a while, then place it in a pet cemetery's ossuary. Ask how remains will be returned before buying an urn.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. Answer that and roughly half of what's on sale drops off the list.
- For display, pick something whose finish works with the room's light and decor, in a capacity that matches the ashes closely.
- For burial, pick something that breaks down naturally or a sealed box, having confirmed what Japan rules and the landowner allow.

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Tokyo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What urn suits a small apartment in Tokyo?
A compact box or a small round metal urn that screws shut usually works in tight spaces, since both fit on a bookshelf and are hard to knock over. Measure the shelf depth and the height between shelves before buying. If a cat climbs the shelves, a small pad of museum putty under the base keeps the urn in place without marking the wood.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Japan?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Tokyo wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years.
