Pet Urns in Auckland: what to know
Most families in Auckland buy their pet's urn from one of three places: the crematory that handled the cremation, an online seller or a local maker. Each has its strengths. The crematory's urns are sized to the ashes it returns; online shops offer the widest range; a local potter or woodworker can make something no one else has. Our city pages cover what's typical in each place.
Weather varies a lot across Auckland, and it matters for any urn kept outdoors or any plan to bury or scatter ashes. In the hottest places, summer highs reach about °F, enough to fade wood and printed photos in direct sun. In the coldest, winter lows average °F, cold enough to crack porous ceramic left outside and freeze the ground for burial.

How Auckland thinks about cremation and urns
Local families are split between two traditions: cremation accounts for roughly 69%[1] of deaths in Auckland, and burial for much of the rest. A pet urn sits comfortably in either. People who lean towards burial often choose a sturdy urn they can later place in the ground or a pet cemetery; those who lean towards cremation usually keep it on display.
We take the Auckland percentage from The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What pet urns cost in Auckland
Urn sizes in Australia and New Zealand are usually quoted in litres. One litre is about 61 cubic inches, so most cats need an urn well under half a litre and a Labrador about 1.2 litres. Published prices from one Brisbane crematory run A$95–A$200[2] for ceramic and timber and A$170–A$245[3] for metal. Delivery to regional areas can take longer than to capital cities, so allow extra time for engraving.
Size before price is a sensible order in Australia and New Zealand, where urns are sold by litre. By our estimate, a 30 kg dog leaves about 0.9-1.5 kg[4] of ashes, which fits comfortably in a 1.5 litre urn. With capacity settled, compare prices: one Brisbane crematory sells ceramic urns and timber boxes for A$95–A$200[2]. Ask anyone in Auckland quoting you whether the urn is sized for the ashes or simply the next size up.
| Urn | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic urns and timber boxes | A$95–A$200[2] | White ceramic to carved wooden cat |
| Metal urns | A$170–A$245[3] | Engraved disc, engraved stand or laser-engraved |

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for Auckland is below.
In New Zealand, urns are usually sized in litres, and local makers often work in native timbers. Some families, particularly those following tikanga Māori, keep ashes away from places where food is prepared or eaten, so a shelf in a living room or bedroom is often preferred over a kitchen. Scattering on private land needs the owner's permission.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Give yourself a week or two before choosing. The first days are rarely the best time for design decisions.
- Picture where the urn will sit, and take a tape measure to it: depth of shelf, clearance under a cupboard, room on the mantel.
- Estimate the ashes. Cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[6]; the ashes weight estimator gives a quick figure.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together, then each piece shares one finish.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, windows shut and no draft, and only if the bag really won't pass through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label close by, slipped under the base or filed in a drawer in the same room.
Keeping your pet close in Auckland
If you'd like part of your pet's ashes outdoors, a quiet corner of your own garden, a favorite walking route (with permission where needed) or a pet cemetery are the usual choices around Auckland. Keeping most of the ashes in an urn at home while scattering a little means you never have to choose between the two.

Questions people ask
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Auckland?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Auckland?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
How much does a pet urn cost in Auckland?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[7]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
Which places in Auckland have the widest choice of pet urns?
Usually the largest cities, such as Auckland, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Auckland?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Auckland?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[8] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
