Pet Urns in Norway: what to know
Across Norway, keeping a pet's ashes at home is common wherever cremation is. The practical questions are the same in every city: how big the urn needs to be, what material suits the home and climate, and whether any ashes will be shared, scattered or buried. Local rules mostly apply to the last two.
In Norway, urn sellers differ more than the urns do. A crematory counter, a memorial shop, an online store and an independent craftsperson may all offer a similar wooden box at very different prices and delivery dates. Compare them on capacity, how the lid closes, total delivered price and the date it reaches you, and the right choice is usually clear.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
A lower cremation rate, about 49.27%[1] in Norway, means fewer local shops stock urns sized for pets, and fewer engravers and potters have memorial experience. Online sellers fill the gap. If you're commissioning something locally, show the maker a finished urn from a catalog so they understand the size, lid and finish you're after.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Norway rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Norway
Prices for pet urns in Norway vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[2], so always ask whether the price quoted in Norway includes personalization.
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for Norway that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[3], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[4]. Most pet crematoria in Norway sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.
| Urn | Published price | Market |

Scattering and burial rules in Norway
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Norway.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Bring the ashes home as they are. The temporary container is sealed and safe; there's no deadline for moving them.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. Before any order goes in, settle whether a spouse, a grown child living elsewhere or a grandparent would like a portion.
- Work out the capacity you need. The rule of thumb is one cubic inch for every pound your pet weighed when well; the urn size calculator does the sum for you.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof of any engraving, and check the spelling of your pet's name twice.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag without opening it, or have the crematory place them in the urn on your behalf.
Remembering your pet, in Norway and beyond
If you'd like part of your pet's ashes outdoors, a quiet corner of your own garden, a favorite walking route (with permission where needed) or a pet cemetery are the usual choices around Norway. Keeping most of the ashes in an urn at home while scattering a little means you never have to choose between the two.

Questions people ask
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Norway?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
How many communities do you cover in Norway?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 3 communities in Norway, including Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Norway?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Norway and winter lows near °F in Norway, the right choice depends on where you are.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Norway?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Do crematories in Norway sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Norway?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[6] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
