Pet Urns in Sweden: what to know
In Sweden, urn sellers differ more than the urns do. A crematory counter, a memorial shop, an online store and an independent craftsperson may all offer a similar wooden box at very different prices and delivery dates. Compare them on capacity, how the lid closes, total delivered price and the date it reaches you, and the right choice is usually clear.
Sharing ashes between family members in different cities is a common part of choosing an urn in Sweden. Most families set aside small shares in matching keepsakes first, then choose the main urn for what's left. Carrying keepsakes in person is simplest; posting ashes has its own rules, which vary by carrier.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
In Sweden, about 84.69%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.
That Sweden rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What pet urns cost in Sweden
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[2].
Keepsakes are where European families in Sweden most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[3] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[4] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.
| Urn | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket | £61–£151[5] | United Kingdom |
| Wooden pet urn | $30–$150[6] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[7] | United States |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[8] | United States |

Before you scatter or bury in Sweden
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Sweden.
In Sweden, ashes from a veterinary cremation normally take two to four weeks to come back[10], which gives you time to choose and order an urn. Urns are sized in litres, and many families choose natural wood or stone. Scattering on your own land is common; public land may have local rules.
Step by step in Sweden
- Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. Answer that and roughly half of what's on sale drops off the list.
- For display, pick something whose finish works with the room's light and decor, in a capacity that matches the ashes closely.
- For burial, pick something that breaks down naturally or a sealed box, having confirmed what Sweden rules and the landowner allow.
- For travel, choose wood or a sturdy container that can pass airport X-ray screening, and carry it in hand luggage.
- Order engraving with a written proof, and allow extra time for photo or custom work.

Remembering your pet, in Sweden and beyond
An urn doesn't have to be the final resting place. Plenty of people keep the ashes at home for a year or two and then decide to bury them, scatter them or split them further. Choosing an urn that opens easily, with the ashes still in their sealed bag, keeps every one of those choices open.

Questions people ask
Do crematories in Sweden sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
How many communities do you cover in Sweden?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 3 communities in Sweden, including Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
What should I ask a crematory in Sweden about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Sweden?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Sweden?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[8] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
Which places in Sweden have the widest choice of pet urns?
Usually the largest cities, such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.
