El Mirage, Arizona
Where families in El Mirage find their urns
The West Valley sun fades and cracks most outdoor memorials within a few summers. If you want a garden marker, choose natural stone or bronze, set it in the shade of a wall or tree, and avoid resin. For a living memorial, desert-adapted plants like a Texas sage or a desert willow need much less water than lawn or roses.
El Mirage is a diverse city, with many Hispanic families alongside newcomers from across the country. Some families keep a small home altar for a pet, with a photo, candle and favorite toy; others prefer a plain urn on a shelf or a stone in the garden. Pick what feels right for your family's own way of remembering, and let the children have a say.
Families in and around El Mirage often have land, which makes burying the ashes, or part of them, a natural choice. You can bury ashes in almost any container, but a biodegradable urn returns to the soil, while a sealed wooden box or a metal urn lasts much longer. If there's any chance the land will be sold, think about keeping a portion indoors in a keepsake so you're not leaving everything behind.
El Mirage's population is around 35,820, the 27th-largest of the 29 Arizona communities we cover. Peoria, roughly 5 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover El Mirage run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Surprise (4 miles, a larger centre), Peoria (5 miles, a larger centre) and Glendale (9 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
13,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in El Mirage
How we calculated this

Local cremation habits and the urn question
About 80.7%[5] of people in Arizona are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.
We take the Arizona rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for El Mirage, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Keeping an urn safe through El Mirage's seasons
Lacquer and hand-painted finishes dry more slowly in humid heat, and some small workshops slow down their finishing work in May, June, July, August, September and October. If you're ordering a hand-finished urn for a summer date in El Mirage, ask whether the season affects their schedule. Laser engraving on metal and stone isn't affected, which makes those materials the safer choice when time is short.
El Mirage summers are hot, with July highs averaging about 105°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.

How much to budget for an urn
What you'll pay for an urn in El Mirage depends mostly on material and size. A national price guide puts ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[6], wooden ones at $30–$150[7], metal at $40–$200[8] and marble or stone at $80–$300[9]. Local crematory counters and online sellers both tend to land inside those ranges, so use them to spot a price that's out of line, and ask for a total that includes engraving and delivery.
The Arizona price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Arizona allows with pet ashes
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
To find your county or city office in Arizona, start with the official Arizona local government directory.
For Arizona's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Arizona guide. Local rules in El Mirage can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
From temporary container to urn
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, rather than being handed it at reception when you're least able to think.
- Choose while your pet is still with you if that feels right; some families find it easier while there's time.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, and allow a little room so the sealed bag slides in easily.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked and ask them to place the ashes in it before they're returned.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. An engraved plate can always be attached a couple of weeks afterwards.
- Plan who will collect the urn; for a delivery, make sure someone is in to accept the parcel.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
El Mirage homes tend to have small yards, so most memorials here are indoor ones: an urn on a bookshelf, a paw-print frame in the hallway, a keepsake photo block for a child's room. For something outside, an engraved stone in a large pot fits in almost any yard and can be carried along if the family moves across town or out of state.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from El Mirage?
Usually yes. Surprise is about 4 miles away, Peoria is about 5 miles away and Glendale is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is El Mirage big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 13,000 El Mirage households keep a dog or cat and around 1,100 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 35,820), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is cremation common in Arizona?
For people, yes: about 80.7%[5] of Arizona deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in El Mirage follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How does El Mirage's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in El Mirage, with average highs around 105°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Can I move my pet's ashes into the urn myself?
Yes, and it's usually simpler than people fear. Most ashes come back in a sealed plastic bag, which you can lift out and place straight into the urn. If the bag won't fit through the opening, work over a tray indoors, away from drafts, and use a spoon or wide funnel. Some crematories will transfer the ashes for you if you drop the urn off.
Can I mail my pet's ashes to a relative from El Mirage?
Within the US, the Postal Service is the only national carrier that accepts cremated remains, and it requires Priority Mail Express with a special label. Pack the ashes in a sealed inner container, cushioned inside a sturdy box. Sending an empty keepsake urn is much simpler: many families post the urn and pass on the ashes in person.
