Buying an urn locally or online in Little Rock
Many Little Rock families have roots in small towns across Arkansas, and relatives may be scattered from the Ozarks to the Delta. Cremation jewelry, tiny keepsake urns and inked paw prints let each branch of the family keep something of a much-loved pet. If you'd like the ashes divided, ask when you order, and ask for a paw print to be taken before cremation.
In parts of Arkansas, families still keep up Decoration Day, gathering each year to clean and put flowers on family graves, and that habit of tending a memorial carries over for many pet owners. An engraved stone under a shade tree, where you can pull weeds and leave fresh flowers, gives a pet's memory the same care. Choose granite that can handle heat, humidity and the occasional hard freeze.
In a place the size of Little Rock, you'll usually find one or two pet crematories and a handful of vet clinics that return ashes, each with a small range of urns. That covers the basics well: wooden boxes, ceramic jars and a few metal designs. For marble, sculpted figurines or photo urns, most families here order online or look to a larger centre such as Little Rock, where specialist makers are more common.
Little Rock's population is around 206,427, the largest of the 26 Arkansas communities we cover.
Our pages for North Little Rock (4 miles), Sherwood (9 miles) and Maumelle (10 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Little Rock as well.
Our estimate
76,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Little Rock
How we calculated this
206,427 ÷ 2.5 = 82,571 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 76,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
6,350
Little Rock families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
76,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 6,350 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
The cremation rate in Arkansas sits at about 52.2%[5]. Where habits are mixed like this, it's common for one person in a household to want the ashes on a shelf and another to feel uneasy about it. A closed wooden box that doesn't look like an urn, or a keepsake kept in a drawer, is a fair compromise while everyone gets used to the idea.
The Arkansas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Little Rock, not as a count of pets.
Keeping an urn safe through Little Rock's seasons
Don't leave an urn, or the temporary container of ashes, in a parked car in a Little Rock summer. The ashes won't change, but glued photo frames, resin and some finishes can warp at the temperatures a closed car reaches. It's also simply a hard thing to come back to. Bring the ashes straight inside when you collect them, and keep the urn out of direct sun once it's home.
For an outdoor memorial in Little Rock's heat, choose stone, granite or a metal rated for outdoor use and place it in partial shade. Dark granite gets hot to the touch in July but won't be damaged. If you're planting a tree with a biodegradable urn, avoid planting at the height of summer: young trees struggle in June, July, August and September, and a cooler season gives the roots time to settle.

How much to budget for an urn
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[6] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[7]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[8].

Before you scatter or bury in Arkansas
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Arkansas.
The official Arkansas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Little Rock.
The rules that apply across Arkansas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Arkansas page. Little Rock may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Give yourself a week or two before choosing. The first days are rarely the best time for design decisions.
- Picture where the urn will sit, then measure the space: shelf depth, height under a cabinet, width on a mantelpiece.
- Estimate the ashes. Roughly 3-5% of body weight[9] comes back as cremated remains; for a figure based on your own pet, try the ashes weight estimator.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together so the finishes match.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, windows shut and no draft, and only if the bag really won't pass through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label close by, slipped under the base or filed in a drawer in the same room.
Ways to remember your pet at home
The Arkansas River Trail, with the Big Dam Bridge and its long views up and down the river, and Pinnacle Mountain west of the city are places many Little Rock families shared with their pets, and some want to remember them there. State parks and the river have their own rules on scattering, so check first. Planting a dogwood or redbud with a biodegradable urn in your own yard is a simpler alternative.

Questions people ask
Why does the Little Rock page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 52.2%[5] of Arkansas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Little Rock?
Usually yes. North Little Rock is about 4 miles away, Sherwood is about 9 miles away and Maumelle is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Little Rock climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is Little Rock big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 76,000 Little Rock households keep a dog or cat and around 6,350 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 206,427), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
Can I take my pet's urn on a plane?
Usually yes, in your hand luggage, but the container needs to pass through airport X-ray screening. Dense metal or stone urns can be hard to screen, and in the US, security officers won't open a container of remains. Wood or a sturdy plastic temporary container is the safest choice for travel. Check your airline's rules too, especially for international flights.
