What choosing an urn is like in Dublin
Families who expect to move again often choose memorials that travel easily: a compact vessel, a pendant, a clay paw impression or a photo book. Dividing ashes among several small containers also helps when grandparents or siblings live in another state or country. Ask for sealed containers, and keep a simple note of what they hold if they will travel by air.
Dublin's newer homes often have compact yards and side gardens, so outdoor memorials here tend to be small: a flat stone set into a planter, a potted lemon tree, a plaque by the front door. In a condo or apartment, a bookshelf or a corner of a desk may be the right home. Measuring the space first makes it easier to choose something that fits.
Rural roads and long carrier routes make timing less predictable around Dublin. If you're planning a memorial on a particular date, order the urn as soon as you've decided and ask for the production time and the shipping time separately. Engraved and custom pieces add a step, so leave a margin of a couple of weeks. The ashes can stay in their temporary container until the urn arrives.
With roughly 71,602 residents, Dublin is the 116th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Fremont, about 11 miles (18 km) away, which is where some providers serving Dublin are based.
The closest communities we cover are Pleasanton (4 miles), San Ramon (6 miles) and Hayward (8 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Dublin too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
26,500
Dublin: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
71,602 ÷ 2.5 = 28,641 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 26,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,200
Dublin families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
26,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How California thinks about cremation and urns
Cremation is the usual choice in California: about 70.5%[5] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Dublin rather than as pet data.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Dublin's climate
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
An outdoor scattering or burial in July, with highs near 89°F, is hard on older relatives and on whoever has to dig. Keep the gathering short, find shade and dig the hole the evening before. Paper, salt and fiber urns can soften in a hot garage or car trunk, so keep a biodegradable urn indoors until the day it's used.

How much to budget for an urn
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[6] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[7]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[8].

Before you scatter or bury in California
If you rent in Dublin, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for California; your city or county has the final word.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Dublin can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Step by step in Dublin
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home and what they'll look like: a sealed bag in a plain box or tin.
- Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own for their room, while the main urn stays in a shared space.
- Invite them to add something: a drawing or a short note can be tucked under the base.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, especially if the urn will sit within reach of small hands.
- Mark the day the urn arrives by doing something small as a family: a candle, a favorite memory shared out loud.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Many Dublin families have roots in India, China, Korea and elsewhere in Asia, and customs for remembering loved ones vary widely. A pet's memorial might sit near family photos, fresh flowers or a small prayer space, or be marked on a particular day each year. Whatever practice feels right in your household is the right one, and there is no need to explain it.

Questions people ask
Does the Dublin climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How many pet owners live in Dublin?
By our estimate, about 26,500 households in Dublin have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,200 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 71,602, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Dublin?
The closest communities we cover are Pleasanton (about 4 miles), San Ramon (about 6 miles) and Hayward (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Dublin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Fremont to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fremont (roughly 11 miles from Dublin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How many families in Dublin end up choosing a pet urn?
We can't count urns, but we can estimate the need. By our estimate, about 26,500 Dublin households have a dog or cat, and roughly 2,200 of those pets die each year. Many are cremated with ashes returned, and in national research on human cremation, 37%[9] of people said they'd keep ashes at home in an urn.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[10]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
