Monrovia, California
What choosing an urn is like in Monrovia
Monrovia Canyon Park, with its trail to a small waterfall, is a place many residents treasure. The city runs the canyon park and the forest above is federal land, so ask each about scattering. Holding back some ashes in a keepsake urn at home means you have somewhere to remember when the canyon is closed after a storm or during fire season.
Hot summers and occasional winter storms in the foothills are hard on outdoor memorials. Stone and cast metal survive the foothill mix of summer sun and winter downpours; painted resin fades within a few seasons. If you plant a bio urn with a tree, pick a species suited to dry summers and water it regularly the first few years. A shaded corner of the garden often works best for a marker. A marker set in the shade of an oak ages gracefully.
Online orders to Monrovia and nearby rural addresses can take a few days longer than they would to a larger centre like Los Angeles, and carriers sometimes leave parcels at a gate or a mailbox cluster. For a fragile ceramic or glass urn, that's a risk. Ask the seller how it's packed, whether you can require a signature, and whether they'll ship to your vet clinic or a local business where someone signs for it.
Monrovia is home to about 38,264 people, the 186th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Monrovia are based about 17 miles away in Los Angeles, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Duarte (2 miles), Arcadia (4 miles) and Azusa (4 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Monrovia too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
14,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Monrovia has (estimate)
How we calculated this
38,264 ÷ 2.5 = 15,306 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,150
Estimated dog and cat losses in Monrovia each year
How we calculated this
14,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,150 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Why urns are common in California
In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.
The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Monrovia, not as a count of pets.
Timing a burial or scattering in Monrovia
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
Monrovia summers are hot, with August highs averaging about 91°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.

How much to budget for an urn
One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[6], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[7]. For most Monrovia families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

Pet ashes and the law in California
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in California.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Monrovia.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Monrovia's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From temporary container to urn
- Leave the temporary container sealed right up until the new urn is in your hands and looked over.
- Read how the urn opens. A wooden urn often has a screwed panel underneath, while a metal one usually unscrews at the top.
- Lay out a towel or tray across a table, with a funnel or spoon within reach should the bag need decanting.
- Place the sealed bag inside and fold the top over. Only open the bag if it truly won't fit.
- Close and secure the urn; on a threaded lid, a touch of glue keeps children and other pets from working it loose.
- Recycle or keep the temporary box; plenty of people store it alongside the paperwork, since it's part of the story.
Remembering your pet, in Monrovia and beyond
Monrovia's older homes, with porches and gardens, suit classic memorials: an engraved stone under a tree, a wooden urn on a mantel, or a framed paw print in the hallway. In a Craftsman house, handmade ceramic or wood pieces often feel at home. Your pet's body weight is a good guide to urn size, so have it handy when you shop.

Questions people ask
How does Monrovia's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Monrovia, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Monrovia?
The closest communities we cover are Duarte (about 2 miles), Arcadia (about 4 miles) and Azusa (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Monrovia too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Monrovia page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Los Angeles to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Los Angeles (roughly 17 miles from Monrovia) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How much does a pet urn cost in Monrovia?
National price guides put ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[9], wooden ones at $30–$150[10] and marble or stone at $80–$300[11]. Keepsakes cost less, at $15–$60[12] (per one large retailer). Monrovia prices usually fall inside those ranges; engraving and delivery add to the total, so ask for a written price for the finished urn.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park near Monrovia?
Often you can, but parks set their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths, playgrounds and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and leave nothing behind. If you're unsure, check with the parks department or scatter on private land with the owner's agreement.
