Moraga, California
How Moraga families shop for a pet urn
Moraga once had pear orchards across the valley, and a few old trees still stand. Some families here like the idea of planting a fruit tree or a native oak over a pet's ashes, with a biodegradable urn beneath. Deer browse young trees heavily, so cage the trunk for the first few years. Plant in autumn, when rains help the roots settle.
The Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail and the lawns around Moraga Commons are places many residents associate with their animals. Park district rules apply to scattering on both, so read them first. Some families leave the remains on a bookshelf and return to the trail on anniversaries with a photograph, often in the soft light of late afternoon, stopping at the bench where they used to rest together.
Small towns are good places to find makers who don't advertise online. The woodworker who sells at the farmers' market, the potter whose mugs are in the café, a jeweller who engraves: any of them may be willing to make or personalize an urn if you ask. It might take longer than a click-and-ship order, but you'll know the person who made it, and so will your neighbors.
Moraga's population is around 16,322, the 274th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Oakland, roughly 8 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Moraga run from there.
Families in Moraga often end up using a provider from Lafayette (4 miles), Orinda (4 miles) and Alamo (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
6,000
Moraga: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
16,322 ÷ 2.5 = 6,529 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
500
Moraga families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
6,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 500 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How California thinks about cremation and urns
Cremation is now the mainstream choice in California, where about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated. In places like this, the urn has become the main memorial for many families, taking the place a headstone once held. That's worth remembering when you choose one for a pet: it may be on a shelf for twenty years, so pick something you'll still like, rather than something that only suits this week.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Moraga, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Moraga
A mild climate makes Moraga a good place for living memorials. Planting a tree or shrub with a biodegradable urn, or burying ashes under a favorite rosebush, can be done in most seasons. Avoid planting just before December if the ground tends to waterlog, and choose a plant that suits your soil. A small engraved stone nearby marks the spot without competing with the garden.
Even in a gentle climate, sunlight is the main thing that ages an urn. A south-facing window in Moraga will fade a walnut urn and a printed photo panel over a couple of years. Place the urn where it gets light but not direct sun, and if you love a particular spot by the window, choose ceramic, stone or glass, which don't fade.

What pet urns cost in Moraga
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Moraga providers to be in the same territory.

Pet ashes and the law in California
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for California.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Moraga, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
From temporary container to urn
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn or whether you'd like a matching set that grows over the years.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, or one a local maker can repeat, if a match matters to you.
- Size each urn for one pet; a shared companion urn only makes sense once both sets of ashes are home.
- Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
- Leave shelf space next to the first urn, so that adding another later doesn't mean moving everything around.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, whether that's an envelope fixed to the underside or all of them in one drawer.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
Moraga is home to a college and many long-rooted families, and memorials here often have a personal touch: a bronze plaque on a garden wall, a hand-painted portrait, a small jar from a local potter, a pendant with a trace of ashes inside. Custom pieces take time, so before committing, ask the maker for the full price and a realistic finish date.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 8 miles from Moraga) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Moraga climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 70°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Moraga?
The closest communities we cover are Lafayette (about 4 miles), Orinda (about 4 miles) and Alamo (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Moraga too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Roughly how many pets die in Moraga each year?
Our estimate is around 500. It comes from Moraga's population (about 16,322), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 6,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How many families in Moraga end up choosing a pet urn?
We can't count urns, but we can estimate the need. By our estimate, about 6,000 Moraga households have a dog or cat, and roughly 500 of those pets die each year. Many are cremated with ashes returned, and in national research on human cremation, 37%[11] of people said they'd keep ashes at home in an urn.
What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?
Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.
