A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Most families never need to think about rules at all: the urn stays at home, and that's allowed everywhere. If you'd like to scatter or bury some of the ashes in or around Ontario, a quick check with the landowner or the park authority avoids awkward moments. Here's a summary for California.

What to do first, and what can wait
- Leave the temporary container sealed until the urn has arrived and you've checked it.
- Read how the urn opens. Many wooden urns open from the base with small screws; many metal ones have a threaded lid.
- Lay out a towel or tray on a table, and have a spoon or funnel ready in case you need it.
- Place the sealed bag inside and fold the top over. Only open the bag if it truly won't fit.
- Close and secure the urn; on a threaded lid, a touch of glue keeps children and other pets from working it loose.
- Recycle or keep the temporary box; some families keep it with the certificate as part of the record.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
Hard, dry ground and summer heat make outdoor memorials in Ontario a practical question. How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Ontario page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Fontana to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fontana (roughly 12 miles from Ontario) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ontario?

Can I take my pet's urn on a plane?
Usually yes, in your hand luggage, but the container needs to pass through airport X-ray screening. Dense metal or stone urns can be hard to screen, and in the US, security officers won't open a container of remains. Wood or a sturdy plastic temporary container is the safest choice for travel. Check your airline's rules too, especially for international flights.
