Vallejo, California
Where families in Vallejo find their urns
Many Vallejo families have ties to the Philippines, the Navy or other places they've lived, and some want a memorial that reflects that history: a faith symbol, a name in another language or a small shrine at home. Urns, stones and plaques can carry most scripts and symbols, so ask to see a proof. Ashes can be divided among relatives in different cities or countries.
The Vallejo waterfront, the Mare Island shoreline and Blue Rock Springs Park are places many residents associate with quiet time outdoors and wide views of the water. If you're thinking of scattering ashes near the bay or in a park, check the rules for that particular place first, since state and local rules apply. A share kept back in a small urn stays with you even if you move away from the water.
Families in Vallejo are often spread across a few towns or states, which makes sharing ashes a practical question as much as an emotional one. A matching set of small keepsake urns lets a sibling in another city or a grown child who's moved away keep a portion. Decide how many shares you need before choosing the main urn, because every share you set aside changes the size it needs to be.
With roughly 123,287 residents, Vallejo is the 47th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Oakland, about 20 miles (33 km) away, which is where some providers serving Vallejo are based.
Our pages for American Canyon (5 miles), Hercules (6 miles) and Benicia (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Vallejo as well.
Our estimate
45,500
Vallejo: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
123,287 ÷ 2.5 = 49,315 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 45,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
3,800
Vallejo families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
45,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,800 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
When cremation covers around 70.5%[5] of deaths, as it does in California, ashes stop being an awkward subject at the dinner table. That openness helps with a pet. Relatives are more likely to ask for a small share, and friends may already know a potter or an engraver. Tell people you're choosing an urn; the most useful leads often come from someone who did it recently.
The California figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Vallejo weather and your pet's urn
An outdoor scattering or burial in July, with highs near 90°F, is hard on older relatives and on whoever has to dig. Keep the gathering short, find shade and dig the hole the evening before. Paper, salt and fiber urns can soften in a hot garage or car trunk, so keep a biodegradable urn indoors until the day it's used.
Don't leave an urn, or the temporary container of ashes, in a parked car in a Vallejo summer. The ashes won't change, but glued photo frames, resin and some finishes can warp at the temperatures a closed car reaches. It's also simply a hard thing to come back to. Bring the ashes straight inside when you collect them, and keep the urn out of direct sun once it's home.

What families in Vallejo typically pay for an urn
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[6] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[7]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[8].

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in California
Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for California is below.

What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. That one choice rules out half the options.
- For display, pick something whose finish works with the room's light and decor, in a capacity that matches the ashes closely.
- For burial, pick something that breaks down naturally or a sealed box, having confirmed what California rules and the landowner allow.
- For travel, choose wood or a sturdy container that can pass airport X-ray screening, and carry it in hand luggage.
- Order engraving with a written proof; expect a longer wait for photographs or bespoke designs.

Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Vallejo's breezy, mild climate is fairly gentle on outdoor memorials, though sun and salt air still wear down wood and resin. An engraved stone marker lasts much longer. If you own your home and plan to stay, a biodegradable urn planted with a drought-tolerant tree or shrub suits the dry summers. Renters may prefer a keepsake urn or potted plant that can move with them.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Vallejo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many pet owners live in Vallejo?
By our estimate, about 45,500 households in Vallejo have at least one dog or cat, and around 3,800 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 123,287, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Vallejo?
Usually yes. American Canyon is about 5 miles away, Hercules is about 6 miles away and Benicia is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 20 miles from Vallejo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Do pet crematories near Vallejo sell urns?
Almost all of them do, and many include a basic urn or wooden box in their private cremation package. The range is usually small but chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like something more personal, you can buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the temporary container until it arrives. Ask the crematory whether they'll swap the included urn for an upgrade at the price difference.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
