Choosing a pet urn in Rome

Rome, Georgia

Pet urns in Rome: the local picture

Rome's humid summers, heavy rain and winter frosts wear down cheap outdoor pieces. Granite, bronze and natural fieldstone are the materials that last in a Floyd County yard; resin and painted concrete fade and crack within a few seasons. On a hillside lot, set a marker on level ground so runoff does not tip it or bury it. Keep fabric, fur and paper keepsakes inside.

Rome has deep roots and old family ties, and memorial choices often reflect that: a stone set in a garden that has been in the family for decades, or an urn kept beside photographs on a mantel. If you would like something portable as well, a small keepsake vessel, a piece of cremation jewelry or a framed paw print can sit alongside a larger urn and later go to a grandchild.

An engraving mistake is harder to fix in a town the size of Rome, because a replacement usually means shipping the urn back and waiting again. Before you approve any wording, ask the seller for a written proof, check the spelling of your pet's name twice and have a second person read it. If you'd rather see it done, a local jeweller or trophy shop may engrave a plate you can fix to the urn yourself.

Rome's population is around 38,934, the 30th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Atlanta, about 58 miles (93 km) away, which is where some providers serving Rome are based.

Our pages for Calhoun (22 miles), Cartersville (23 miles) and Acworth (32 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Rome as well.

Our estimate

14,500

How many dog- or cat-owning households Rome has (estimate)

How we calculated this

38,934 ÷ 2.5 = 15,574 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

1,200

Estimated dog and cat losses in Rome each year

How we calculated this

14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

A pet at home in Rome

Cremation in Georgia, and what it means for urns

Roughly 54.2%[5] of people in Georgia are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.

For the Georgia figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Rome rather than as pet data.

Heat, cold and damp: materials for Rome

Local weather also affects deliveries. Storms, extreme heat and holiday rushes can all add days to an urn's journey, and fragile ceramic or glass travels best in mild weather. If a date matters, order early and ask the seller for the making time and shipping time separately. Your provider in Rome can tell you what they'd recommend at this time of year.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Rome

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them

If part of the ashes will go into the ground, the cost picture changes. Biodegradable pet urns run $15–$80[7] in one national guide, and outdoor rock or sandstone urns made to sit in a garden cost $300–$395[8] at one crematory network. A simple engraved garden stone over buried ashes is cheaper still: by our estimate, entry prices sit at ~$39[9] across three US sellers. For many Rome families, that pairing costs less than one marble urn.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury

Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Georgia.

To find your county or city office in Georgia, start with the official Georgia local government directory.

The Georgia page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Rome's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Ask what came with the cremation. Many packages include a basic urn, and some let you upgrade for the difference.
  2. Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
  3. Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
  4. Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, as both figures count when you have a day in mind.
  5. Unpack the urn the day it arrives, so any chip or dent gets reported without delay.
  6. Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.

Keepsakes, displays and living memorials

With three rivers and plenty of wooded hills around town, some Rome families choose a memorial rooted in the landscape: a sapling planted with a portion of the ashes, a smooth river stone engraved with a name, or a garden bench facing the view. Dividing ashes among several pieces works best once you know the returned weight, which the crematory can estimate in advance.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Georgia?

For people, yes: about 54.2%[5] of Georgia deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rome follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Atlanta to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Atlanta (roughly 58 miles from Rome) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is Rome big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 14,500 Rome households keep a dog or cat and around 1,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 38,934), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Rome?

The closest communities we cover are Calhoun (about 22 miles), Cartersville (about 23 miles) and Acworth (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rome too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?

Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.

Can two pets share one urn?

Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
