Pet urns in Ames: the local picture
Memorials in Ames reflect a town of students and long-settled families alike. A student might pick a pendant or a palm-sized urn that fits a dorm shelf, while a family on a quiet street may lay a flat stone among the hostas or plant a maple. There's no deadline for any of it; the provider's container holds up fine until you're ready.
With January lows near 9 degrees, Ames is hard on outdoor memorials. Porous stone, thin concrete and resin crack in the freeze-thaw cycle, while granite and bronze last for decades. If you want a marker in the yard, rest it on compacted gravel so it stays level through winter heaving, and keep indoor urns out of damp basements where labels and wood can suffer.
An engraving mistake is harder to fix in a town the size of Ames, because a replacement usually means shipping the urn back and waiting again. Before you approve any wording, ask the seller for a written proof, check the spelling of your pet's name twice and have a second person read it. If you'd rather see it done, a local jeweller or trophy shop may engrave a plate you can fix to the urn yourself.
With roughly 68,220 residents, Ames is the 8th-largest of the 27 Iowa communities we cover. Des Moines, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ames run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Ankeny (20 miles), Johnston (24 miles) and Altoona (27 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Ames routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
25,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Ames has (estimate)
How we calculated this
68,220 ÷ 2.5 = 27,288 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 25,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,100
Estimated dog and cat losses in Ames each year
How we calculated this
25,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,100 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation customs in Iowa and your pet
With about 63.6%[5] of people in Iowa cremated, attitudes to ashes vary from family to family. Some relatives will love an urn on the mantelpiece; others will find it strange. It can help to think about who shares the space. A discreet wooden box that looks like a keepsake chest, or a photo urn that reads as a picture frame, lets the ashes stay close without dominating the room.
For the Iowa figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Ames rather than as pet data.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Ames's climate
Winter storms slow deliveries, especially in the weeks around the holidays. If you're ordering an engraved urn in January, add a margin of a week or more to the seller's estimate. When a glass or glazed ceramic urn arrives after a cold journey, leave the box indoors for an hour or two before unpacking so the piece warms up gradually; sudden temperature changes can crack glass.
Freeze and thaw are hard on some urn materials left outdoors. Water that seeps into unglazed ceramic, terracotta or porous stone expands when it freezes and can crack the piece over one winter. If the urn will live outside in Ames, choose granite, sealed stone or metal rated for outdoor use, or bring it indoors for the 5 coldest months.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Ames
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[6] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[7]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[8].

Before you scatter or bury in Iowa
Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Iowa covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.
Iowa keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ames.
For Iowa's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Iowa guide. Local rules in Ames can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Step by step in Ames
- Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, if you can: a clipping of fur or the collar can go into a keepsake later.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label carries your pet's name before putting the box or bag in a calm corner of the house.
- Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
- Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.
Ways to remember your pet at home
People who adopted a pet during college, then moved on, sometimes keep the ashes for years before choosing a permanent place. Dividing ashes helps when a pet was shared between roommates or partners: small vials, jewelry or keepsake boxes can travel with each person. Mention early on if you'd like a paw print or clipped fur, because the provider has to take it beforehand.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Ames actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Des Moines, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ames and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ames?
Usually yes. Ankeny is about 20 miles away, Johnston is about 24 miles away and Altoona is about 27 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Iowa attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Iowa human cremation rate at about 63.6%[5]. We show it on the Ames page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Ames climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?
Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.
Is there free support if I'm struggling after my pet's death?
Yes. Several US veterinary schools run free pet loss helplines. Tufts University's helpline is free[10] and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings, with voicemail at other times, and Cornell's hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking to someone can make practical choices, like the urn, feel less heavy.
