Derby, Kansas
Buying an urn locally or online in Derby
Some Derby families split ashes so that a grown child at college or a relative stationed elsewhere can keep a share. Tiny keepsake urns, lockets and glass pendants make that easy. Others prefer a single urn and a framed photo from a favorite day by the river. Always see a design proof and get the full price before ordering, including shipping.
Derby's newer homes tend to have open kitchens, family rooms and backyard patios, and those spaces lend themselves to a simple memorial: an urn on a sideboard, an inked paw in a frame by the back door, or a stone beside a patio planter. Families expecting a move often pick something small that packs easily. No decision is needed right away.
Small towns are good places to find makers who don't advertise online. The woodworker who sells at the farmers' market, the potter whose mugs are in the café, a jeweller who engraves: any of them may be willing to make or personalize an urn if you ask. It might take longer than a click-and-ship order, but you'll know the person who made it, and so will your neighbors.
Derby's population is around 26,606, the 15th-largest of the 23 Kansas communities we cover. Wichita, roughly 10 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Derby run from there.
Derby sits within easy reach of Wichita (10 miles, a larger centre), Newton (33 miles) and Hutchinson (50 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Derby; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
9,800
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Derby
How we calculated this
26,606 ÷ 2.5 = 10,642 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,800. Multi-pet homes count once.

How Kansas thinks about cremation and urns
About 64.6%[5] of people in Kansas are cremated, so cremation and burial both have a place here. For pets, cremation is by far the more practical choice, and many families in Derby end up with an urn even if their own family tradition leans towards burial. Some bridge the two by burying the urn itself, in a garden or a pet cemetery, which gives a graveside feeling without a full burial.
We take the Kansas rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Derby, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Derby weather and your pet's urn
With hot summers and freezing winters, timing matters for anything done outdoors. Burying ashes is easiest in late spring or early autumn, when the ground is workable and the heat has eased. Many families in Derby keep the urn indoors through January, February and December and hold a small burial or scattering when the weather turns mild, with a keepsake set aside for anyone who can't be there.
Derby has real seasons: highs around 93°F in July and average lows below freezing in January, February and December. That range is hard on urns kept outdoors. Porous ceramic can crack in winter and wood fades in summer. Indoors, the main thing is to keep urns away from both the summer sun and the winter heater. Outside, granite and sealed stone are the materials that handle both.

How much to budget for an urn
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[6] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[7]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[8].

Pet ashes and the law in Kansas
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.

What to do first, and what can wait
- Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, where possible: a lock of fur or their collar might become part of a keepsake down the line.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
- Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.
Remembering your pet, in Derby and beyond
Hail is a real threat to outdoor memorials around Wichita, along with summer sun and winter ice. Solid granite and bronze are the dependable choices; hollow resin statues crack. If you plan a memorial tree with a biodegradable urn, plant in early spring and choose a species that handles clay soil and heat, then water it deeply through its first August.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Derby?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Derby?
Usually yes. Wichita is about 10 miles away, Newton is about 33 miles away and Hutchinson is about 50 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Derby each year?
Our estimate is around 820. It comes from Derby's population (about 26,606), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,800 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Why does the Derby page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 64.6%[5] of Kansas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
Can I mail my pet's ashes to a relative from Derby?
Within the US, the Postal Service is the only national carrier that accepts cremated remains, and it requires Priority Mail Express with a special label. Pack the ashes in a sealed inner container, cushioned inside a sturdy box. Sending an empty keepsake urn is much simpler: many families post the urn and pass on the ashes in person.
