Choosing a pet urn in Bowie
Prince George's County winters bring freeze-thaw cycles and summers bring strong sun, a combination that fades paint and cracks resin within a few years. For something meant to stay outside, choose natural stone or bronze, and seat it on crushed gravel so frost doesn't tip it. If you move, a stone memorial can come with you when it is lifted from its bed carefully.
Bowie has a strong homeowner culture, and many families like a memorial they can see from the kitchen or deck. A flat granite stone among the flower beds, a small bench plaque or a tree over a biodegradable urn all work in a suburban yard. Indoors, a shelf urn, a framed paw print or jewelry holding a tiny amount of ashes keep the memory close without any HOA question.
Small towns are good places to find makers who don't advertise online. The woodworker who sells at the farmers' market, the potter whose mugs are in the café, a jeweller who engraves: any of them may be willing to make or personalize an urn if you ask. It might take longer than a click-and-ship order, but you'll know the person who made it, and so will your neighbors.
Bowie's population is around 58,383, the 8th-largest of the 19 Maryland communities we cover. Washington, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bowie run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Greenbelt (8 miles), College Park (11 miles) and Hyattsville (12 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Bowie too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
21,500
Bowie: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
58,383 ÷ 2.5 = 23,353 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 21,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,800
Bowie families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
21,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,800 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Why urns are common in Maryland
Roughly 55.2%[5] of people in Maryland are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.
For the Maryland figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bowie rather than as pet data.
Timing a burial or scattering in Bowie
Winter storms slow deliveries, especially in the weeks around the holidays. If you're ordering an engraved urn in January, add a margin of a week or more to the seller's estimate. When a glass or glazed ceramic urn arrives after a cold journey, leave the box indoors for an hour or two before unpacking so the piece warms up gradually; sudden temperature changes can crack glass.
Bowie winters bring average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. If you'd like to bury your pet's ashes in the garden, frozen ground may mean waiting until spring. That's fine: the ashes are safe indoors in the temporary container or the urn, and many families find a spring burial, with the first flowers coming up, a gentler moment than a cold graveside in January.

What families in Bowie typically pay for an urn
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[7] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[8]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[9].

What Maryland allows with pet ashes
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
Maryland keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Bowie.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Maryland level first; our Maryland rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Bowie or your HOA adds anything.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Give yourself a week or two, then choose; design decisions come more easily once the earliest days have passed.
- Picture where the urn will sit, then measure the space: shelf depth, height under a cabinet, width on a mantelpiece.
- Estimate the ashes. Cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[11]; the ashes weight estimator gives a quick figure.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together, then each piece shares one finish.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, indoors and away from drafts, if the bag won't fit through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label with the urn, tucked underneath or in a drawer nearby.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Some Bowie families order more than one item: a main urn plus a few small keepsakes for grown children who live elsewhere. That works well, but it means asking the provider to divide the ashes or return enough to share. Paw prints, nose prints and snips of fur can only be taken before cremation, so mention them the moment you make the first call.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Bowie?
The closest communities we cover are Greenbelt (about 8 miles), College Park (about 11 miles) and Hyattsville (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bowie too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Maryland?
For people, yes: about 55.2%[5] of Maryland deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bowie follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Washington to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Washington (roughly 16 miles from Bowie) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Roughly how many pets die in Bowie each year?
Our estimate is around 1,800. It comes from Bowie's population (about 58,383), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 21,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How many families in Bowie end up choosing a pet urn?
We can't count urns, but we can estimate the need. By our estimate, about 21,500 Bowie households have a dog or cat, and roughly 1,800 of those pets die each year. Many are cremated with ashes returned, and in national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of people said they'd keep ashes at home in an urn.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Maryland?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
