Pet urns and keepsakes in Eagan

Eagan, Minnesota

How Eagan families shop for a pet urn

Over the years some Eagan households lose more than one animal, and they build a shelf of small matching urns rather than scattering each set of ashes. Others choose a companion urn with two chambers so two pets who were inseparable can rest together. Engraving plates can often be swapped or added later, which keeps the display flexible as the family's story continues.

Eagan's many townhomes and apartments leave little room for a yard memorial, and plenty of people here turn a windowsill or a bookshelf into a small remembrance corner: an urn, a photo, perhaps a candle for the evenings. Over the months, new things tend to join it: a tag, a drawing, a sympathy card. Nothing needs to be chosen straight away, since ashes keep indefinitely in a closed container.

The monument company that makes headstones for the cemetery is an overlooked option in towns like Eagan. Many will cut a small granite marker or engrave a stone urn for a pet, and they know which stone stands up to local weather. Ask for a quote on a simple flat marker if the ashes will be buried on your land; it can be ready within a few weeks.

With roughly 67,109 residents, Eagan is the 13th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Saint Paul, about 10 miles (16 km) away, which is where some providers serving Eagan are based.

Our pages for Inver Grove Heights (5 miles), Apple Valley (5 miles) and Rosemount (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Eagan as well.

Our estimate

24,500

Eagan: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

67,109 ÷ 2.5 = 26,844 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 24,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

2,050

Eagan families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

24,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,050 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Eagan

Why urns are common in Minnesota

Roughly 68.5%[5] of people in Minnesota are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Minnesota figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Eagan tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Keeping an urn safe through Eagan's seasons

Cold months are a good time for indoor decisions. The 5 months with freezing lows are when many Eagan families settle on the urn, order engraving and plan a spring planting or scattering. Doing the choosing indoors in winter means that when the ground thaws, everything is ready, and the day itself can be about your pet rather than errands.

Freeze and thaw are hard on some urn materials left outdoors. Water that seeps into unglazed ceramic, terracotta or porous stone expands when it freezes and can crack the piece over one winter. If the urn will live outside in Eagan, choose granite, sealed stone or metal rated for outdoor use, or bring it indoors for the 5 coldest months.

What families in Eagan typically pay for an urn

One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[7], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[8]. For most Eagan families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

What Minnesota allows with pet ashes

If you rent in Eagan, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Minnesota; your city or county has the final word.

Minnesota keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Eagan.

The rules that apply across Minnesota (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Minnesota page. Eagan may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Choosing and filling the urn, step by step

  1. Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, rather than being handed it at reception when you're least able to think.
  2. Choose while your pet is still with you if that feels right; some families find it easier while there's time.
  3. Size the urn from their weight at their best, then add a small margin so the bag goes in without forcing.
  4. Tell the crematory which urn you've picked and ask them to place the ashes in it before they're returned.
  5. Leave the engraving until the dates are final. A plate can be fixed to the urn a week or two later.
  6. Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.

Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

When choosing an urn, a common rule of thumb is about one cubic inch of capacity for every pound your companion weighed in life. Wood, ceramic, metal and plant-based materials all work; the choice mostly comes down to where the urn will sit and whether it will ever be buried. Many providers list capacity on each design, so compare against your pet's weight.

Questions people ask

Why does the Eagan page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 68.5%[5] of Minnesota residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Eagan?

Usually yes. Inver Grove Heights is about 5 miles away, Apple Valley is about 5 miles away and Rosemount is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Does the Eagan climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 83°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Where are the providers that serve Eagan actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Saint Paul, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Eagan and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is there free support if I'm struggling after my pet's death?

Yes. Several US veterinary schools run free pet loss helplines. Tufts University's helpline is free[10] and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings, with voicemail at other times, and Cornell's hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking to someone can make practical choices, like the urn, feel less heavy.

How do I make sure the engraving is right?

Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
