Lodi, New Jersey
Buying an urn locally or online in Lodi
Felician University's campus in Lodi brings students and staff from across the region, and some are far from home when a pet dies. In that case, ask whether the provider can hold the ashes or ship them to a permanent address later. A keepsake that holds only a little ash is easy to carry when you move on after graduation or a job change.
Outdoor memorials in Lodi should be sturdy and portable. Summer heat, winter salt and the occasional high water along the Saddle River all take a toll. A granite or bronze marker in a large planter can sit on a patio or step and come along if you relocate. Sandblasted or deep-cut lettering resists weathering far better than printed or painted designs, and it can be refreshed later.
There's no need to rush the urn in Lodi, even if the ashes come back sooner than you expected. The temporary container your vet hands you is sealed and safe. Plenty of rural families keep it on a shelf through the winter and decide in spring whether to bury, scatter or display. If you'd like help thinking it through, tell us about your pet and we'll email some options.
With roughly 26,187 residents, Lodi is the 38th-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Newark, about 11 miles (18 km) away, which is where some providers serving Lodi are based.
The closest communities we cover are Garfield (1 miles), Hackensack (2 miles) and Elmwood Park (3 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lodi too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
9,650
Lodi: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
26,187 ÷ 2.5 = 10,475 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,650. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
800
Lodi families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,650 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 800 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Why urns are common in New Jersey
About 56.5%[5] of people in New Jersey are cremated, so cremation and burial both have a place here. For pets, cremation is by far the more practical choice, and many families in Lodi end up with an urn even if their own family tradition leans towards burial. Some bridge the two by burying the urn itself, in a garden or a pet cemetery, which gives a graveside feeling without a full burial.
For the New Jersey figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Lodi rather than as pet data.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Lodi's climate
If you live near the coast, salt air is a bigger enemy than temperature. Raw brass and some metals darken quickly within sight of the sea, and outdoor metal can pit. Lacquered brass, powder-coated metal, glazed ceramic and stone all cope well. For a garden memorial in Lodi, granite or a sealed stone urn will look the same in ten years as it does now.
Lodi's climate is fairly gentle, so the weather rarely rushes any urn decision. You can bury, plant or scatter almost any time of year. The one month to plan around is July, usually the wettest: soaked ground makes digging messy, and scattering in rain is harder than it sounds. A dry, still morning in almost any other month works well.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Lodi providers to be in the same territory.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for New Jersey: New Jersey costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What New Jersey allows with pet ashes
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in New Jersey.
New Jersey keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Lodi.
We keep New Jersey's burial and scattering rules in one place: the New Jersey rules summary. Before a home burial in Lodi, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Ask what came with the cremation. Many packages include a basic urn, and some let you upgrade for the difference.
- Check how the ashes came back. Most are in a sealed bag inside a box or tin; note its size before measuring any urn.
- Shortlist two or three urns whose listing gives a real volume figure in cubic inches or litres rather than a vague size word.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, as both figures count when you have a day in mind.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.
Ways to remember your pet at home
Lodi's garden apartments and two-family homes don't leave much space for a yard memorial, so indoor keepsakes are common: a small urn beside a framed photo, a nose print in a shadow box, a charm on a bracelet. If you rent, portable memorials save you a decision later. The ashes are safe in the box they arrive in until you're ready.

Questions people ask
How do New Jersey attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New Jersey human cremation rate at about 56.5%[5]. We show it on the Lodi page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lodi?
The closest communities we cover are Garfield (about 1 miles), Hackensack (about 2 miles) and Elmwood Park (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lodi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How does Lodi's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Lodi, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January and February, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Newark to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Newark (roughly 11 miles from Lodi) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Do pet crematories near Lodi sell urns?
Almost all of them do, and many include a basic urn or wooden box in their private cremation package. The range is usually small but chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like something more personal, you can buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the temporary container until it arrives. Ask the crematory whether they'll swap the included urn for an upgrade at the price difference.
What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?
Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.
