Pet urns in Westfield: sizes, costs and engraving
By our estimate, about 12,000 households in Westfield share their home with a dog or cat, and roughly 1,000 of those pets die each year. Many of their ashes come home needing an urn. Here's how to choose one well.

Pet urns in Westfield: the local picture
Families here often favor classic, understated keepsakes: a hardwood urn, a framed paw impression, a small engraved pendant. If several relatives want something, ask for the ashes to be divided and for extra prints. Prints have to be requested before cremation, so raise it on the first call, along with any fur you'd like clipped and saved. A small wooden box can hold the collar, tag and prints together.
Snow, ice and road salt are part of every Westfield winter, and they wear down outdoor memorials. Granite and bronze hold their lettering far longer than resin or concrete. A level bed of crushed stone keeps a marker from heaving in a thaw, and a place near a wall or shrub offers shelter from snowblower spray. Brushing snow off by hand, rather than with a shovel, keeps the edges crisp.
In a close community like Westfield, a pet's death is often noticed by neighbors, church friends and the people at the feed store. Some families choose an urn with that in mind, something that can sit in a front room where visitors will see it, rather than tucked away. Others want a private keepsake that only they understand. Both are right, and neither needs to be expensive.
Westfield's population is around 32,595, the 28th-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Westfield are based about 11 miles away in Newark, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Roselle (4 miles), Summit (4 miles) and Rahway (5 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
12,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Westfield
How we calculated this
32,595 ÷ 2.5 = 13,038 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,000
Estimated dog and cat losses in Westfield each year
How we calculated this
12,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,000 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
Local families are split between two traditions: cremation accounts for roughly 56.5%[5] of deaths in New Jersey, and burial for much of the rest. A pet urn sits comfortably in either. People who lean towards burial often choose a sturdy urn they can later place in the ground or a pet cemetery; those who lean towards cremation usually keep it on display.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the New Jersey figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Westfield tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Westfield's climate
Freeze and thaw are hard on some urn materials left outdoors. Water that seeps into unglazed ceramic, terracotta or porous stone expands when it freezes and can crack the piece over one winter. If the urn will live outside in Westfield, choose granite, sealed stone or metal rated for outdoor use, or bring it indoors for the 3 coldest months.
Cold months are a good time for indoor decisions. The 3 months with freezing lows are when many Westfield families settle on the urn, order engraving and plan a spring planting or scattering. Doing the choosing indoors in winter means that when the ground thaws, everything is ready, and the day itself can be about your pet rather than errands.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Westfield
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Westfield providers to be in the same territory.

Scattering and burial rules in New Jersey
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in New Jersey.
To find your county or city office in New Jersey, start with the official New Jersey local government directory.
For New Jersey's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the New Jersey guide. Local rules in Westfield can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
From temporary container to urn
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, so the choice isn't made at a front desk afterwards.
- Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, then add a small margin so the bag goes in without forcing.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked and ask them to place the ashes in it before they're returned.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. A plate can be fixed to the urn a week or two later.
- Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Westfield's established gardens lend themselves to outdoor memorials: a slate marker among hostas, a small tree planted in spring, a bench beneath an old maple. If you might sell the house one day, pick something you can move, like a stone in a planter or an urn kept indoors. You needn't decide right away; the returned ashes are sealed and safe until you're ready.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in New Jersey?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[5] of New Jersey deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Westfield follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Westfield?
The closest communities we cover are Roselle (about 4 miles), Summit (about 4 miles) and Rahway (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Westfield too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Newark to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Newark (roughly 11 miles from Westfield) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Westfield climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[10]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
Can I move my pet's ashes into the urn myself?
Yes, and it's usually simpler than people fear. Most ashes come back in a sealed plastic bag, which you can lift out and place straight into the urn. If the bag won't fit through the opening, work over a tray indoors, away from drafts, and use a spoon or wide funnel. Some crematories will transfer the ashes for you if you drop the urn off.
