Pet urns in High Point: sizes, costs and engraving

High Point, North Carolina

Buying an urn locally or online in High Point

A city built on furniture-making has plenty of woodworkers, and some High Point families choose a hand-built wooden urn or memory box for a pet's ashes. Others prefer a ceramic urn, a garden stone under a dogwood or a necklace holding a grain or two of ash. There's no deadline, and the crematory's container keeps ashes safe while you think.

Oak Hollow Lake, City Lake Park and the greenway trails hold years of shared routines for many High Point households, which is why some hope to leave a pinch of ash there. City parks may limit scattering, so call the parks department before you go. Setting out a tree or flowering shrub in your own yard is a simple alternative.

In a place the size of High Point, you'll usually find one or two pet crematories and a handful of vet clinics that return ashes, each with a small range of urns. That covers the basics well: wooden boxes, ceramic jars and a few metal designs. For marble, sculpted figurines or photo urns, most families here order online or look to a larger centre such as Greensboro, where specialist makers are more common.

With roughly 120,571 residents, High Point is the 9th-largest of the 64 North Carolina communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Greensboro, about 12 miles (20 km) away, which is where some providers serving High Point are based.

The closest communities we cover are Thomasville (9 miles), Kernersville (9 miles) and Greensboro (13 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to High Point too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

44,500

High Point: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

120,571 ÷ 2.5 = 48,228 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 44,500. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

3,700

dog and cat deaths per year in High Point, our estimate

How we calculated this

44,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,700 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in High Point

How North Carolina thinks about cremation and urns

Roughly 57.3%[5] of people in North Carolina are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.

The North Carolina percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for High Point, not as a count of pets.

High Point weather and your pet's urn

High Point summers are hot, with July highs averaging about 89°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.

Don't leave an urn, or the temporary container of ashes, in a parked car in a High Point summer. The ashes won't change, but glued photo frames, resin and some finishes can warp at the temperatures a closed car reaches. It's also simply a hard thing to come back to. Bring the ashes straight inside when you collect them, and keep the urn out of direct sun once it's home.

Pet urn and engraving prices for High Point

Many High Point families don't buy an urn separately at all. A Virginia provider, for example, prices private cremation packages at $189–$300[7]: the lowest comes with a temporary container, the next with a wooden urn and the top with a wooden photo urn. That kind of package upgrade is often the cheapest way to get a decent urn. Compare it with the ranges below before you order elsewhere.

The full price table by product is on our North Carolina page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you scatter or bury in North Carolina

Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for North Carolina.

Not sure which office covers High Point? The North Carolina local government directory is the official list.

The North Carolina page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. High Point's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Step by step in High Point

  1. Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, so the choice isn't made at a front desk afterwards.
  2. Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
  3. Size the urn from their weight at their best, then add a small margin so the bag goes in without forcing.
  4. Tell the crematory which urn you've picked so the ashes can be transferred into it before you collect them.
  5. Leave the engraving until the dates are final. A plate can be fixed to the urn a week or two later.
  6. Plan who will collect the urn; for a delivery, make sure someone is in to accept the parcel.

Remembering your pet, in High Point and beyond

Muggy summers, pop-up thunderstorms and the occasional winter ice storm all wear on outdoor memorials in the Piedmont. Granite shrugs off the weather, while painted resin fades and untreated wood grows mildew within a season or two. Indoors, pieces made of wood, paper or fabric last longest in an air-conditioned room, well away from a damp crawl space or a hot attic.

Questions people ask

Does the High Point climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Which nearby towns can I compare with High Point?

The closest communities we cover are Thomasville (about 9 miles), Kernersville (about 9 miles) and Greensboro (about 13 miles). Providers based in those places often serve High Point too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is High Point big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 44,500 High Point households keep a dog or cat and around 3,700 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 120,571), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

How do North Carolina attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the North Carolina human cremation rate at about 57.3%[5]. We show it on the High Point page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can I mail my pet's ashes to a relative from High Point?

Within the US, the Postal Service is the only national carrier that accepts cremated remains, and it requires Priority Mail Express with a special label. Pack the ashes in a sealed inner container, cushioned inside a sturdy box. Sending an empty keepsake urn is much simpler: many families post the urn and pass on the ashes in person.

Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?

Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
