Pet urns in Dublin: sizes, costs and engraving

Dublin, Ohio

How Dublin families shop for a pet urn

A bio urn paired with a native sapling, perhaps a flowering dogwood, a serviceberry or a swamp white oak, suits a Dublin backyard. The Irish heritage the city celebrates also draws some families to plant a small ornamental tree in a shady corner. Plant in April or October, water deeply every week of the first summer, and check your HOA's front-yard rules first.

Because a lot of Dublin households came here for jobs and may move again, memorials that pack easily are popular. A handsome urn for a bookcase, a pendant with a pinch of ash, a nose print pressed into clay: each goes wherever the family goes. When a grown child who lives out of state also wants a share, confirm the total volume with your provider before choosing sizes.

Small towns are good places to find makers who don't advertise online. The woodworker who sells at the farmers' market, the potter whose mugs are in the café, a jeweller who engraves: any of them may be willing to make or personalize an urn if you ask. It might take longer than a click-and-ship order, but you'll know the person who made it, and so will your neighbors.

With roughly 49,094 residents, Dublin is the 18th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Columbus, about 13 miles (21 km) away, which is where some providers serving Dublin are based.

The closest communities we cover are Powell (5 miles), Hilliard (5 miles) and Upper Arlington (7 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Dublin too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

18,000

Dublin: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

49,094 ÷ 2.5 = 19,638 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 18,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

1,500

Estimated dog and cat losses in Dublin each year

How we calculated this

18,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Dublin

Why urns are common in Ohio

The cremation rate in Ohio sits at about 59.1%[5]. Where habits are mixed like this, it's common for one person in a household to want the ashes on a shelf and another to feel uneasy about it. A closed wooden box that doesn't look like an urn, or a keepsake kept in a drawer, is a fair compromise while everyone gets used to the idea.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Dublin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Seasons, scattering and delivery in Dublin

Scattering in snow is possible but rarely what families picture. Grey ashes stand out on white snow and melt into slush, and a cold wind makes it hard to take your time. Many people in Dublin keep the ashes at home through January, February, March and December and scatter in spring, on a favorite walk or by open water. A scattering tube or a small keepsake urn keeps a portion ready until the day comes.

Winter storms slow deliveries, especially in the weeks around the holidays. If you're ordering an engraved urn in January, add a margin of a week or more to the seller's estimate. When a glass or glazed ceramic urn arrives after a cold journey, leave the box indoors for an hour or two before unpacking so the piece warms up gradually; sudden temperature changes can crack glass.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them

One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[6], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[7]. For most Dublin families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Ohio: Ohio costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Pet ashes and the law in Ohio

Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Ohio.

Ohio keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Dublin.

The Ohio page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Dublin's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A simple plan for the urn decision

  1. Tell your child the ashes are coming home, describing them beforehand: a closed bag inside an ordinary tin or box.
  2. Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
  3. Offer a small keepsake of their own to keep in their bedroom, with the main urn living somewhere the whole family uses.
  4. Invite them to add something: a drawing or a short note can be tucked under the base.
  5. Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, especially if the urn will sit within reach of small hands.
  6. Mark the day the urn arrives with a moment together, such as lighting a candle or telling a favorite story.

Keepsakes, displays and living memorials

Many Dublin neighborhoods have homeowners' associations with rules about what can go in a yard. A low, flat stone tucked into an established planting bed usually passes without any fuss, whereas a statue or upright marker might not. Central Ohio's freeze-thaw winters split cheap concrete, so granite, slate or a piece of Ohio sandstone is the better long-term choice for a garden spot.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Dublin?

The closest communities we cover are Powell (about 5 miles), Hilliard (about 5 miles) and Upper Arlington (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Dublin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How many pet owners live in Dublin?

By our estimate, about 18,000 households in Dublin have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,500 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 49,094, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

How does Dublin's weather affect pet aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Dublin, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.

Where are the providers that serve Dublin actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Columbus, about 13 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Dublin and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can the crematory send the urn straight to our home near Dublin?

Many can, though some prefer to return ashes through the vet clinic. Ask when you arrange the cremation. If they ship it, ask how the ashes will be packed, which carrier they use and whether a signature is needed. For a heavy stone urn, collecting it from the clinic may be simpler than waiting for a rural delivery.

What size urn does my dog or cat need?

The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[9]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
