Lancaster, Ohio
What choosing an urn is like in Lancaster
The sandstone cliffs and hollows of the Hocking Hills, just south of Lancaster, draw many families toward a nature-themed memorial. A slab of local sandstone engraved with a name looks at home in a Fairfield County garden, though it softens and weathers faster than granite, so pick a hard, fine-grained piece. State parks and forests set their own terms for scattering, so ask the office before you hike in.
Lancaster's older houses often have mantels, built-in shelves and deep windowsills, natural resting places for an urn beside a framed photograph. Turned wood, glazed ceramic and small bronze containers all sit comfortably in a Victorian or early 20th-century room. Should relatives hope for a portion, request a few spoonfuls packed separately so they can go into pendants or tiny urns.
Online orders to Lancaster and nearby rural addresses can take a few days longer than they would to a larger centre like Columbus, and carriers sometimes leave parcels at a gate or a mailbox cluster. For a fragile ceramic or glass urn, that's a risk. Ask the seller how it's packed, whether you can require a signature, and whether they'll ship to your vet clinic or a local business where someone signs for it.
Lancaster's population is around 41,956, the 31st-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Lancaster are based about 27 miles away in Columbus, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Pickerington (14 miles), Reynoldsburg (19 miles) and Pataskala (21 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lancaster too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
15,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Lancaster has (estimate)
How we calculated this
41,956 ÷ 2.5 = 16,782 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,300
dog and cat deaths per year in Lancaster, our estimate
How we calculated this
15,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
Roughly 59.1%[5] of people in Ohio are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Lancaster tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Lancaster
Lancaster winters bring average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. If you'd like to bury your pet's ashes in the garden, frozen ground may mean waiting until spring. That's fine: the ashes are safe indoors in the temporary container or the urn, and many families find a spring burial, with the first flowers coming up, a gentler moment than a cold graveside in January.
Ice and snow in January, February and December can make the drive to a crematory or pet cemetery slow and unpredictable. If you're collecting the ashes, or dropping off an urn for the crematory to fill, pick a clear day and call ahead. Nothing is lost by waiting a week; the ashes are kept safely until you can get there.

How much to budget for an urn
Many Lancaster families don't buy an urn separately at all. A Virginia provider, for example, prices private cremation packages at $189–$300[7]: the lowest comes with a temporary container, the next with a wooden urn and the top with a wooden photo urn. That kind of package upgrade is often the cheapest way to get a decent urn. Compare it with the ranges below before you order elsewhere.

What Ohio allows with pet ashes
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Ohio.

For Ohio's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Ohio guide. Local rules in Lancaster can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, ideally one a nearby craftsperson could reproduce, if future urns need to match.
- Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
- Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
- Leave shelf space beside the first urn so a later one can join it without rearranging the room.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, whether that's an envelope fixed to the underside or all of them in one drawer.
Remembering your pet, in Lancaster and beyond
Glassmaking has been part of Lancaster's working life for generations, so a glass keepsake with a little ash swirled inside feels especially at home here. These pieces take only a small portion, leaving the rest for an urn or the garden, and they catch the light on a windowsill. Before cremation, find out from the glass artist how much ash to set aside and how the ash should be delivered.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lancaster?
The closest communities we cover are Pickerington (about 14 miles), Reynoldsburg (about 19 miles) and Pataskala (about 21 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lancaster too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Lancaster climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Ohio attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Ohio human cremation rate at about 59.1%[5]. We show it on the Lancaster page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How many pet owners live in Lancaster?
By our estimate, about 15,500 households in Lancaster have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,300 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 41,956, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Do pet crematories near Lancaster sell urns?
Almost all of them do, and many include a basic urn or wooden box in their private cremation package. The range is usually small but chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like something more personal, you can buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the temporary container until it arrives. Ask the crematory whether they'll swap the included urn for an upgrade at the price difference.
How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Lancaster?
It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[9]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.
