Pet urns in Lima: the local picture
Lima's older houses often have porches, small fenced yards and a mantel or two, and many families here keep memorials simple: a walnut box beside a snapshot on the dresser, or a flat stone in the flower bed by the steps. Cheap cast concrete tends to spall after a few northwest Ohio winters, so if you want engraved lettering outdoors, granite or bronze keeps it readable longest.
Meaningful memorials do not have to be expensive. A framed paw print made at home with washable ink, a stone painted by the kids, a photo printed at the drugstore, or a tree planted from a bare-root sapling each spring can matter as much as a costly urn. For families spread between town and farm, a few small portions of ashes let everyone keep a share.
Farm families around Lima sometimes need urns for animals most urn sellers don't think about: a working collie, a pair of barn cats, a much-loved goat. For larger animals, check capacity carefully, since extra-large urns are less common and cost more. For several small animals, a shelf of matching simple boxes, or a single garden memorial with the ashes buried beneath, can be easier than a separate urn for each.
Lima's population is around 34,695, the 43rd-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Fort Wayne, roughly 58 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lima run from there.
Our pages for Sidney (31 miles), Findlay (33 miles) and Piqua (42 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Lima as well.
Our estimate
13,000
Lima: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
34,695 ÷ 2.5 = 13,878 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 13,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,050
dog and cat deaths per year in Lima, our estimate
How we calculated this
13,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,050 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
Cremation is common but not universal in Ohio, where about 59.1%[5] of people are cremated. Pet crematories here usually sell a solid core range of urns rather than a huge catalog, so families who want something unusual, like a figurine or a marble urn, often buy online. The local range is still worth seeing first, since those urns are chosen to fit the ashes that crematory returns.
We take the Ohio rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Lima, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for Lima
Freeze and thaw are hard on some urn materials left outdoors. Water that seeps into unglazed ceramic, terracotta or porous stone expands when it freezes and can crack the piece over one winter. If the urn will live outside in Lima, choose granite, sealed stone or metal rated for outdoor use, or bring it indoors for the 4 coldest months.
Ice and snow in January, February, March and December can make the drive to a crematory or pet cemetery slow and unpredictable. If you're collecting the ashes, or dropping off an urn for the crematory to fill, pick a clear day and call ahead. Nothing is lost by waiting a week; the ashes are kept safely until you can get there.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Lima
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Lima providers to be in the same territory.

What Ohio allows with pet ashes
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Ohio.

For Ohio's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Ohio guide. Local rules in Lima can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares first, and fill the main urn with what remains; the ashes sharing planner works out each person's portion.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
- Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
Some Lima families picture the Ottawa River or a quiet corner of a city park when they think about scattering. Public land comes with rules, so check with the city first, or use your own yard or a relative's farm with permission. A pendant or a little keepsake urn holding a spoonful means some of your pet stays on your shelf.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Lima?
By our estimate, about 13,000 households in Lima have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,050 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 34,695, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lima?
Usually yes. Sidney is about 31 miles away, Findlay is about 33 miles away and Piqua is about 42 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Ohio attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Ohio human cremation rate at about 59.1%[5]. We show it on the Lima page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How does Lima's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Lima, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[11]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
Do pet crematories near Lima sell urns?
Almost all of them do, and many include a basic urn or wooden box in their private cremation package. The range is usually small but chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like something more personal, you can buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the temporary container until it arrives. Ask the crematory whether they'll swap the included urn for an upgrade at the price difference.
