How Tulsa families shop for a pet urn
Tulsa's River Parks and the trails along the Arkansas River are places many families connect with their pets. The river is broad and its sandbars shift, so if you scatter ashes there, do it from a safe spot on the bank. Check the rules for city parks, and get the owner's blessing before using private land. Many people bring a small portion home for a keepsake.
Burial has long been common in Oklahoma, but cremation has become more usual, and keeping ashes at home is now familiar to many Tulsa families. For a pet, that might be an urn on the mantel, a cedar box, an ink paw print, or a charm holding a small amount of ashes. Several small containers let adult children in different towns each keep a share.
Many homes in and around Tulsa have a garden, which opens up a choice city apartments don't have: part indoors, part outside. Some families keep the main urn on a shelf and bury a small portion in a biodegradable urn under a favorite shrub. Others choose a weatherproof stone urn for the garden itself. If you rent, or might move in the next few years, keep the main urn indoors so it can come with you.
About 416,209 people live in Tulsa, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Sand Springs (8 miles), Jenks (11 miles) and Sapulpa (13 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Tulsa routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
155,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Tulsa
How we calculated this
416,209 ÷ 2.5 = 166,484 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 155,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
13,000
Tulsa families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
155,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 13,000 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Oklahoma thinks about cremation and urns
About 58.6%[5] of people in Oklahoma are cremated, so cremation and burial both have a place here. For pets, cremation is by far the more practical choice, and many families in Tulsa end up with an urn even if their own family tradition leans towards burial. Some bridge the two by burying the urn itself, in a garden or a pet cemetery, which gives a graveside feeling without a full burial.
That Oklahoma rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Tulsa only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing a burial or scattering in Tulsa
Because Tulsa swings from July heat to winter frost, a planted memorial needs a little planning. Put a biodegradable urn and a young tree in the ground in spring or early autumn, water it through its first summer and mulch it before January. A tree that survives its first year usually settles in, and it will mark the spot for decades.
Outdoor memorials in Tulsa have to survive July heat and the frosts of January. If you'd like the ashes in the garden, many families bury them in a simple biodegradable urn and put a granite or stone marker above, rather than leaving a decorative urn outside. The marker handles the weather, and the ashes are safely underground whatever the season.

What families in Tulsa typically pay for an urn
If part of the ashes will go into the ground, the cost picture changes. Biodegradable pet urns run $15–$80[6] in one national guide, and outdoor rock or sandstone urns made to sit in a garden cost $300–$395[7] at one crematory network. A simple engraved garden stone over buried ashes is cheaper still: by our estimate, entry prices sit at ~$39[8] across three US sellers. For many Tulsa families, that pairing costs less than one marble urn.
The Oklahoma price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Oklahoma.
City of Tulsa Refuse & Recycling publishes Tulsa's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation. Oklahoma keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Tulsa.
For Oklahoma's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Oklahoma guide. Local rules in Tulsa can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Give yourself a week or two before choosing. The first days are rarely the best time for design decisions.
- Picture where the urn will sit, then measure the space: shelf depth, height under a cabinet, width on a mantelpiece.
- Estimate the ashes. Cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[10]; the ashes weight estimator gives a quick figure.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together so the finishes match.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, indoors and away from drafts, if the bag won't fit through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label with the urn, tucked underneath or in a drawer nearby.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
Tulsa's weather is hard on outdoor memorials: summer sun fades paint, and hail and ice storms crack thin materials. Granite, slate and sealed stone hold up far better than painted wood or thin metal. In a yard, a memorial stone in a shaded bed or a biodegradable urn under a young redbud, Oklahoma's state tree, makes a lasting tribute, as long as it gets water in summer.

Questions people ask
Why does the Tulsa page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 58.6%[5] of Oklahoma residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Tulsa big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 155,000 Tulsa households keep a dog or cat and around 13,000 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 416,209), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tulsa?
Usually yes. Sand Springs is about 8 miles away, Jenks is about 11 miles away and Sapulpa is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Tulsa?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is it cheaper to buy a pet urn locally or online?
Online prices often look lower, but shipping, engraving and the risk of a breakage can close the gap. A crematory's counter price is convenient and the urn is sized to the ashes. Compare the total delivered price of the exact urn you want, engraved, rather than headline prices. The memorial budget planner helps you add it up.
How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Tulsa?
It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[11]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.
