Shavano Park, Texas
What choosing an urn is like in Shavano Park
Shavano Park families often want memorials that sit well in a carefully furnished home: a hardwood box on a bookshelf, a carved stone urn, a framed paw impression in a hallway. Others choose jewelry, so a little of their pet can go wherever they go. You do not have to decide at once; the temporary container from the provider is perfectly fine while you think.
San Antonio has a deep tradition of honoring the dead at home, and many families keep a small space with photographs and candles. A pet can have a place there too, beside a collar, a favorite toy and a framed picture. Some households add marigolds or papel picado around Día de los Muertos in early November; others keep the corner simple all year.
There's no need to rush the urn in Shavano Park, even if the ashes come back sooner than you expected. The temporary container your vet hands you is sealed and safe. Plenty of rural families keep it on a shelf through the winter and decide in spring whether to bury, scatter or display. If you'd like help thinking it through, tell us about your pet and we'll email some options.
Shavano Park is home to about 3,861 people, the 257th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is San Antonio, about 12 miles (19 km) away, which is where some providers serving Shavano Park are based.
For a second opinion on price, Alamo Heights (9 miles), Olmos Park (9 miles) and Terrell Hills (10 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Shavano Park routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
1,400
Shavano Park: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
3,861 ÷ 2.5 = 1,544 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,400. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
120
Estimated dog and cat losses in Shavano Park each year
How we calculated this
1,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 120 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation in Texas, and what it means for urns
Local families are split between two traditions: cremation accounts for roughly 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas, and burial for much of the rest. A pet urn sits comfortably in either. People who lean towards burial often choose a sturdy urn they can later place in the ground or a pet cemetery; those who lean towards cremation usually keep it on display.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Shavano Park only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Shavano Park's climate
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
For an outdoor memorial in Shavano Park's heat, choose stone, granite or a metal rated for outdoor use and place it in partial shade. Dark granite gets hot to the touch in August but won't be damaged. If you're planting a tree with a biodegradable urn, avoid planting at the height of summer: young trees struggle in June, July, August and September, and a cooler season gives the roots time to settle.

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Texas
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Texas.

How to get from ashes to urn
- Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. That one choice rules out half the options.
- For display, pick something whose finish works with the room's light and decor, in a capacity that matches the ashes closely.
- For burial, pick something that breaks down naturally or a sealed box, having confirmed what Texas rules and the landowner allow.
- For travel, a wooden urn or another robust container that X-ray can see through is the safe pick, kept in your carry-on.
- Order engraving with a written proof; expect a longer wait for photographs or bespoke designs.
- Tell us what you're looking for using the contact form; we'll reply by email with urns that can be shipped to Shavano Park.
Ways to remember your pet at home
South Texas sun is fierce on anything left outdoors. Granite, sandstone and cast bronze stay handsome for decades, while painted resin fades within a few summers. For a living memorial, Texas mountain laurel, redbud or a young live oak tolerate the dry heat and limestone soil around San Antonio far better than a nursery exotic, once they have rooted in.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to San Antonio to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in San Antonio (roughly 12 miles from Shavano Park) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How many pet owners live in Shavano Park?
By our estimate, about 1,400 households in Shavano Park have at least one dog or cat, and around 120 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 3,861, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Shavano Park?
Usually yes. Alamo Heights is about 9 miles away, Olmos Park is about 9 miles away and Terrell Hills is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Shavano Park page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will Shavano Park's summer heat damage my pet's urn?
Indoors, heat on its own won't harm most urns, but direct sun will. Wood and printed photos fade, and resin can soften in a very hot room or car. Keep the urn on an inside wall away from sunny windows, and never leave it in a parked car in August. Ceramic, stone and metal handle heat well.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Shavano Park wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
