Spring, Texas
What choosing an urn is like in Spring
Spring's damp climate is hard on some memorial materials. Soft stone and unsealed wood attract mildew and moss, and low-lying yards near the creeks can flood. Granite, bronze and sealed hardwood hold up better. Planting a dogwood or a native holly over a biodegradable urn works best in winter, in a spot that drains rather than one that puddles after every summer thunderstorm.
People in Spring mark a pet's death in all kinds of ways, from a private evening at home to a gathering in the backyard with neighbors. The urn, the plaque and the framed photo can be decided whenever you're ready, even months from now. Nose prints, paw imprints and saved tufts of fur work differently: ask for those while your pet is still with the provider, before cremation.
If you live near Spring but work or shop in Houston, it may be simpler to have the urn delivered there, or to choose one in person at a crematory or memorial supplier in the larger centre. That's especially true for heavy pieces like marble or granite. Just ask for the exact capacity in cubic inches before you drive anywhere, so you know it will fit the ashes you have.
Spring's population is around 62,000, the 65th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Houston, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Spring run from there.
Our pages for Oak Ridge North (5 miles), The Woodlands (6 miles) and Shenandoah (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Spring as well.
Our estimate
23,000
Spring: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
62,000 ÷ 2.5 = 24,800 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 23,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,900
dog and cat deaths per year in Spring, our estimate
How we calculated this
23,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,900 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

39%[3]

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
Local families are split between two traditions: cremation accounts for roughly 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas, and burial for much of the rest. A pet urn sits comfortably in either. People who lean towards burial often choose a sturdy urn they can later place in the ground or a pet cemetery; those who lean towards cremation usually keep it on display.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Spring, not as a count of pets.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Spring's climate
If you're ordering an urn online in May, June, July, August and September, think about where it will wait after delivery. A parcel left on a sun-baked porch can get hot enough to soften adhesives on photo urns or warp a resin piece. Ceramic, stone and metal cope fine. Ask for a delivery window, require a signature or send it to your workplace so it goes inside as soon as it arrives.
For an outdoor memorial in Spring's heat, choose stone, granite or a metal rated for outdoor use and place it in partial shade. Dark granite gets hot to the touch in August but won't be damaged. If you're planting a tree with a biodegradable urn, avoid planting at the height of summer: young trees struggle in May, June, July, August and September, and a cooler season gives the roots time to settle.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[6], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[7]. For most Spring families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

Before you scatter or bury in Texas
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Texas.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Spring.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Spring or your HOA adds anything.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares first, and fill the main urn with what remains; the ashes sharing planner works out each person's portion.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
- Plan any scattering for a calm, dry day, and keep a little back in case someone wants to join later.
Keeping your pet close in Spring
Tall loblolly pines and heavy shade give many Spring backyards a woodland feel, and memorials here often suit that setting: a moss-edged stone beneath the trees, a cedar keepsake box, a small bronze plaque on a fence post. Plenty of owners also choose indoor urns or wearable pieces. Dividing ashes lets relatives in Katy, The Woodlands or out of state each keep something.

Questions people ask
Is Spring big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 23,000 Spring households keep a dog or cat and around 1,900 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 62,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 22 miles from Spring) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Spring?
Usually yes. Oak Ridge North is about 5 miles away, The Woodlands is about 6 miles away and Shenandoah is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Spring climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
Can I mail my pet's ashes to a relative from Spring?
Within the US, the Postal Service is the only national carrier that accepts cremated remains, and it requires Priority Mail Express with a special label. Pack the ashes in a sealed inner container, cushioned inside a sturdy box. Sending an empty keepsake urn is much simpler: many families post the urn and pass on the ashes in person.
