Pet Urns in Queensland: what to know
Pet urns in Queensland are mostly about practical decisions made calmly: the capacity you need, the material that suits your home and climate, and whether anyone in the family wants a keepsake. None of those decisions needs to be made in the first week. The ashes are safe in the temporary container for as long as it takes.
Urn choice in Queensland also depends on how the ashes come back. Most crematories return them as fine, pale grit in a sealed bag, sized roughly in proportion to your pet's weight. The standard rule of one cubic inch of urn space per pound of healthy weight works well almost everywhere, and the urn size calculator does the arithmetic.

How Queensland thinks about cremation and urns
Cremation is familiar in Queensland, where roughly 71%[1] of deaths end in it, and that familiarity has a practical upside: people know what an urn weighs, how much it holds and how awkward a lid can be. Pet owners here tend to ask sellers sharp questions, and you should too. Get the capacity, the way it closes and the delivery date in writing before you pay.
FuneralSmart (2023) publishes the Queensland rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Pet urn and engraving prices for Queensland
Urn sizes in Australia and New Zealand are usually quoted in litres. One litre is about 61 cubic inches, so most cats need an urn well under half a litre and a Labrador about 1.2 litres. Published prices from one Brisbane crematory run A$95–A$200[2] for ceramic and timber and A$170–A$245[3] for metal. Delivery to regional areas can take longer than to capital cities, so allow extra time for engraving.
Australian pet crematories often sell urns and timber boxes directly. One Brisbane provider lists them from A$95–A$200[2], from a white ceramic urn to a carved wooden cat, and metal urns at A$170–A$245[3] depending on how they're engraved; laser engraving takes about two weeks[3]. Prices in Queensland will vary, but that's a fair picture of what a crematory counter charges.
| Urn | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic urns and timber boxes | A$95–A$200[2] | White ceramic to carved wooden cat |

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Queensland.
In Australia, pet urns are usually sized in litres, and many crematories sell urns and timber boxes directly alongside their cremation service. Delivery to regional areas can take noticeably longer than to capital cities, so allow extra time for engraved pieces. Scattering on private land needs the owner's permission, and national parks and beaches often have their own rules.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
From temporary container to urn
- Bring the ashes home as they are. The temporary container is sealed and safe; there's no deadline for moving them.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. Before any order goes in, settle whether a spouse, a grown child living elsewhere or a grandparent would like a portion.
- Work out the capacity you need. The rule of thumb is one cubic inch for every pound your pet weighed when well; the urn size calculator does the sum for you.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof of any engraving, and check the spelling of your pet's name twice.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag straight into the urn, or ask the crematory to do it for you.
Remembering your pet, in Queensland and beyond
Children often want something of their own to hold. A small keepsake urn on a bedside table, or a soft photo cushion, can help a child in Queensland feel included without keeping the main urn in their room. Let them help choose it, or write something to go inside the urn's base.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Queensland?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Queensland choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
How much does a pet urn cost in Queensland?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[5]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[6]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
Do crematories in Queensland sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Queensland?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
