Scattering and burial rules in Queensland
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Queensland.
In Australia, pet urns are usually sized in litres, and many crematories sell urns and timber boxes directly alongside their cremation service. Delivery to regional areas can take noticeably longer than to capital cities, so allow extra time for engraved pieces. Scattering on private land needs the owner's permission, and national parks and beaches often have their own rules.

A simple plan for the urn decision
- Ask what came with the cremation. Many packages include a basic urn, and some let you upgrade for the difference.
- Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
