Choosing a pet urn in Rio de Janeiro
Space is tight in most Rio apartments, so a memorial here often needs to be small: a shelf with a photo and a little container, a piece of jewelry, or a framed paw print. If your pet loved the sea or the forest, you might keep a small share at home and scatter the rest. Ask your provider whether they can divide the ashes so different family members can each keep something.
In Brazil only about 9% of people are cremated, so many Rio families are deciding for the first time what to do with ashes. There's no single right answer. Some keep them at home in a simple container, some choose a keepsake that holds a small amount, and others prefer a paw print or a photo and let the ashes go somewhere meaningful. Take your time; the remains can wait until you're ready.
Most private cremation packages in Rio de Janeiro already include something to bring the ashes home in, from a plain tin to a simple wooden urn. Before you buy separately, ask exactly what's included and whether the crematory will swap the standard container for an upgrade at a price difference rather than full retail. If you already own an urn, some providers will place the ashes into it for you if you drop it off in time.
Rio de Janeiro is home to about 6,748,000 people.

Cremation in Brazil, and what it means for urns
In Brazil, about 9%[1] of people are cremated, lower than in many places. That shows in the urn market: local crematories may offer a smaller range, and fewer shops stock memorial pieces. The upside is that online makers deliver almost everywhere. If you'd like to see something before buying, ask the crematory whether they have samples you can handle.
That Brazil rate is a human one, published by Exame, citing Sincep (2024). We quote it for Rio de Janeiro only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Rio de Janeiro
For an outdoor memorial in Rio de Janeiro, choose materials that handle both sun and frost: granite, sealed stone or outdoor-rated metal. Wood and unglazed ceramic are best kept indoors. If you'd like the ashes themselves in the garden, burying them in a biodegradable urn under a stone marker is the most weatherproof option of all.

How much to budget for an urn
If you're buying from abroad for delivery to Rio de Janeiro, choose a sturdy material. Wood and metal survive long journeys far better than ceramic or glass. The table shows US prices for comparison; keepsake urns there cost $15–$60[5] (per one large retailer), which makes a small set an affordable way to share ashes with family in other cities or countries.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
From temporary container to urn
- Talk to the family first. Agree who would like a keepsake and whether any ashes will be scattered or buried.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
- Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.
Ways to remember your pet at home
Brazilians mark Finados, the Day of the Dead on November 2, by visiting graves and remembering family, and some pet owners like to light a candle or set out flowers for their animal on that day too. A memorial doesn't have to be permanent to matter. A plant on the balcony, a stone from a favorite beach, or a keepsake worn every day can all hold a memory.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Brazil?
For people, yes: about 9%[1] of Brazil deaths end in cremation, according to Exame, citing Sincep (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rio de Janeiro follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where in the house should a pet urn go?
A shelf in a room you use daily, shaded from strong sunlight, with no radiator, heater or steamy kitchen or bathroom close by. Put it high enough that pets and small children can't knock it down, on a surface that doesn't wobble. Many families choose a spot they pass every day; others prefer somewhere private, like a bedroom. Either is right if it feels right to you.
How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Rio de Janeiro?
It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[7]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Brazil?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
What urn suits a small apartment in Rio de Janeiro?
A compact box or a small round metal urn that screws shut usually works in tight spaces, since both fit on a bookshelf and are hard to knock over. Measure the shelf depth and the height between shelves before buying. If a cat climbs the shelves, a small pad of museum putty under the base keeps the urn in place without marking the wood.
How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?
Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.
