Pet Urns in Brazil: what to know
In Brazil, urn sellers differ more than the urns do. A crematory counter, a memorial shop, an online store and an independent craftsperson may all offer a similar wooden box at very different prices and delivery dates. Compare them on capacity, how the lid closes, total delivered price and the date it reaches you, and the right choice is usually clear.
Sharing ashes between family members in different cities is a common part of choosing an urn in Brazil. Most families set aside small shares in matching keepsakes first, then choose the main urn for what's left. Carrying keepsakes in person is simplest; posting ashes has its own rules, which vary by carrier.

Why urns are common in Brazil
Only around 9%[1] of deaths in Brazil end in cremation, so many pet owners here have never held an urn or seen ashes. It helps to know what to expect: ashes are pale, coarse and heavier than they look, packed in a sealed bag. Once you've seen them, choosing a container stops feeling strange and becomes a practical job you can do well.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Brazil
Before buying a separate urn in Brazil, ask whether one is already included. Some providers fold a standard urn into the price of an individual cremation: a US water-cremation provider, for example, charges $150–$450[2] by weight with a standard urn included. We can't cite local prices for Brazil, but the question is the same everywhere: what container comes back, and what would an upgrade cost?
If you're buying from abroad for delivery to Brazil, choose a sturdy material. Wood and metal survive long journeys far better than ceramic or glass. The table shows US prices for comparison; keepsake urns there cost $15–$60[3] (per one large retailer), which makes a small set an affordable way to share ashes with family in other cities or countries.
| Urn | Typical price | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic urn | $20–$100[4] | Fragile in long-distance shipping |
| Wooden urn | $30–$150[5] | Travels well |
| Metal urn | $40–$200[6] | Travels well |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[3] | For sharing ashes |

Before you scatter or bury in Brazil
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Brazil.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Talk to the family first. Agree who would like a keepsake and whether any ashes will be scattered or buried.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, read your carrier's rules before packing. USPS is the only US service that takes them, and only via Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn once you know what's left, sized for that amount.
- Plan any scattering for a calm, dry day, and keep a little back in case someone wants to join later.
Remembering your pet, in Brazil and beyond
For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

Questions people ask
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Brazil?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Brazil?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Brazil?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[3] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Brazil choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
How much does a pet urn cost in Brazil?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[8]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Brazil?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
