Pet urns in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Sao Paulo, Brazil

What choosing an urn is like in Sao Paulo

Many São Paulo families have roots in the interior or in other states, and a weekend house or a parent's home may feel like the right place for a pet's ashes. If you might scatter or bury some there and keep some here, ask whether the ashes can be divided. A tree or a small stone in a family garden can be visited on holidays, while a keepsake at home stays close every day.

Brazilians remember the dead on Finados, November 2, and some São Paulo pet owners quietly include their animals: a candle, flowers, a photo by the window. A memorial can also be something you do rather than something you buy, such as a donation to an animal shelter in your pet's name. Whatever you choose, there's no deadline; the ashes can wait until you're ready.

People in large cities move more often than most, between apartments, neighborhoods and sometimes countries. That's a good reason to choose an urn that travels well: solid wood or metal rather than thin glass, a lid that locks or screws shut and a size you can carry in a bag. If you expect to fly with the ashes one day, wood and plastic pass airport X-ray screening more easily than dense metal or stone.

About 12,330,000 people live in Sao Paulo.

Local cremation habits and the urn question

Burial is still the usual choice for people in Brazil, with cremation at around 9%[1], and some families feel a pet deserves a grave too. An urn can give you that. Placed in the ground at home or in a cemetery plot, under a small stone, it's a place to visit, and it can be lifted and taken along if you ever move house.

We take the Brazil rate from Exame, citing Sincep (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Sao Paulo, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Keeping an urn safe through Sao Paulo's seasons

Weather mostly matters for anything you do outdoors. Frost can crack porous ceramic and stone left outside, strong sun fades wood and printed photos, and damp rooms tarnish brass. Indoors, in a lived-in room away from heaters and direct sun, almost any urn will last for decades. Keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside the urn for extra protection.

What families in Sao Paulo typically pay for an urn

In Sao Paulo, the most reliable source of an urn is usually the pet crematorium itself, which will have urns sized to the ashes it returns. Importing an urn can mean customs charges, delays and a hard-to-return breakage. The table below shows US material prices as a relative guide: metal urns cost $40–$200[5] there, and marble or stone $80–$300[6].

Before you scatter or bury in Brazil

If you'd like to bury the urn itself, the material matters for more than looks. A biodegradable urn breaks down within a few seasons, while metal, resin or sealed hardwood stays intact for years, which some cemeteries and landowners prefer and others don't accept. Check before you order. The notes below summarize Brazil.

Choosing and filling the urn, step by step

  1. Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. Answer that and roughly half of what's on sale drops off the list.
  2. For display, choose a material that suits your room and light, and a size close to your pet's ashes.
  3. For burial, pick something that breaks down naturally or a sealed box, having confirmed what Brazil rules and the landowner allow.
  4. For travel, choose wood or a sturdy container that can pass airport X-ray screening, and carry it in hand luggage.
  5. Order engraving with a written proof, and allow extra time for photo or custom work.

Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

Cremation of people is still uncommon in Brazil, around 9% of deaths, but in São Paulo keeping a pet's ashes has become familiar. Options range from a simple container kept at home to jewelry holding a little ash, memorial stones, paw print keepsakes and biodegradable urns. In a city apartment, the practical question is where the memorial will live, so think about size before you choose anything.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Brazil?

For people, yes: about 9%[1] of Brazil deaths end in cremation, according to Exame, citing Sincep (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sao Paulo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park near Sao Paulo?

Often you can, but parks set their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths, playgrounds and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and leave nothing behind. If you're unsure, check with the parks department or scatter on private land with the owner's agreement.

Do I have to buy an urn right away?

No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Sao Paulo wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.

What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?

Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.

How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Sao Paulo?

It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[8]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.

Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?

Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
