Pet Urns in China: what to know

In China, most families first see urns at the pet crematory, which usually offers a small range with its private cremation service. You're never obliged to buy one there. Many people take the ashes home in the temporary container and choose an urn later from an online seller or a local maker.

If you're in China and trying to work out what to spend, start with the prices a local crematory publishes and compare them with the delivered, engraved price of any urn you like online. Our city pages list sourced price ranges and the questions worth asking before you order.

We cover 2 communities in China, from Shanghai and Beijing.

Cremation customs in China and your pet

Cremation accounts for about 50%[1] of deaths in China. Because it isn't yet everyone's default, local memorial shops may carry only a few pet designs. That's no reason to settle. Take the capacity you need and a photo of the spot where the urn will go, and you'll soon see whether the local range fits or whether to look further.

Source for the China figure: Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in China

Plenty of households in China pay for two containers rather than one: a niche-sized urn for a columbarium and a small keepsake for the home altar. Budget for both from the start. We don't have local price lists to cite, so as a relative guide only: in the US, photo urns cost $40–$150[2] and keepsake or mini urns $15–$60[3]. Ask your crematorium whether a matching pair is sold together.

If you're ordering an urn from overseas for delivery to China, add shipping, duties and the risk of breakage to the price. A locally made urn, or one from your pet crematorium, avoids most of that. For a sense of how materials compare, US guides put ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[4] and marble or stone at $80–$300[5].

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury

Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for China follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
  2. Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
  3. Shortlist two or three urns whose listing gives a real volume figure in cubic inches or litres rather than a vague size word.
  4. Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
  5. Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
  6. Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.

Remembering your pet, in China and beyond

Children often want something of their own to hold. A small keepsake urn on a bedside table, or a soft photo cushion, can help a child in China feel included without keeping the main urn in their room. Let them help choose it, or write something to go inside the urn's base.

Questions people ask

How many communities do you cover in China?

We currently have local pet urn guides for 2 communities in China, including Shanghai and Beijing. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.

Which places in China have the widest choice of pet urns?

Usually the largest cities, such as Shanghai and Beijing, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[8]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in China?

Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.

Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in China?

Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.

How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in China?

It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
