Pet Urns in Shanghai: what to know
A useful way to use the Shanghai pages is to start with your own town, then look at the largest city nearby. The town page tells you what's typical where you live: how urns reach you and what the weather means for an outdoor memorial. The larger city's page shows what's within a day's drive, such as showrooms, stone workshops and makers who take commissions.
Across Shanghai, one question comes up more often than price or material: what to do when people in the family want different things. One wants the ashes at home, another wants them scattered, a third wants a pendant. The answer is usually all three. Keep the shares small, write down who has what and choose the main urn last.

Cremation in Shanghai, and what it means for urns
With about 50%[1] of people in Shanghai cremated, attitudes to ashes vary from family to family. Some relatives will love an urn on the mantelpiece; others will find it strange. It can help to think about who shares the space. A discreet wooden box that looks like a keepsake chest, or a photo urn that reads as a picture frame, lets the ashes stay close without dominating the room.
We take the Shanghai percentage from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
In much of Asia, small apartments shape the urn choice more than price does. A compact urn or a keepsake on a home altar is common, and many pet crematoria sell urns designed for columbarium niches. We don't yet have sourced local urn prices, so the table shows US material prices for relative comparison: marble costs about three times as much as ceramic[2].
Plenty of households in Shanghai pay for two containers rather than one: a niche-sized urn for a columbarium and a small keepsake for the home altar. Budget for both from the start. We don't have local price lists to cite, so as a relative guide only: in the US, photo urns cost $40–$150[3] and keepsake or mini urns $15–$60[4]. Ask your crematorium whether a matching pair is sold together.
| Item | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Columbarium niche for pet ashes | SGD 300 first year, SGD 180 a year after | Singapore |
| Ceramic pet urn | $20–$100[5] | United States |
| Metal pet urn | $40–$200[6] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[7] | United States |

What Shanghai allows with pet ashes
If you rent in Shanghai, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Shanghai; your city or county has the final word.
Step by step in Shanghai
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, or one a local maker can repeat, if a match matters to you.
- Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
- Label the base of every urn, naming who it holds and when, whatever is engraved on the front, so there's no confusion later.
- Leave shelf space beside the first urn so a later one can join it without rearranging the room.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, whether that's an envelope fixed to the underside or all of them in one drawer.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Keepsakes are how families spread across different cities share one pet. A matching set of small urns, a pendant that holds a pinch of ashes or a glass bead made with a little of them can each travel with a different person. The jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet's ashes can fill.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in Shanghai?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 1 communities in Shanghai, including Shanghai. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Shanghai?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Shanghai?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Shanghai?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[4] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
What should I ask a crematory in Shanghai about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
Do crematories in Shanghai sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
