Pet Urns in the Czech Republic

Pet Urns in the Czech Republic: what to know

Pet urns in the Czech Republic follow the same basic choices as anywhere: size, material, personalization and where the urn will live. What differs from country to country is who sells them, how they're sized (cubic inches or litres), how long delivery takes and which rules apply to scattering and burying ashes. This page covers the Czech Republic as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Across the Czech Republic, keeping a pet's ashes at home is common wherever cremation is. The practical questions are the same in every city: how big the urn needs to be, what material suits the home and climate, and whether any ashes will be shared, scattered or buried. Local rules mostly apply to the last two.

Cremation customs in the Czech Republic and your pet

Cremation is familiar in the Czech Republic, where roughly 85.64%[1] of deaths end in it, and that familiarity has a practical upside: people know what an urn weighs, how much it holds and how awkward a lid can be. Pet owners here tend to ask sellers sharp questions, and you should too. Get the capacity, the way it closes and the delivery date in writing before you pay.

The cremation figure for the Czech Republic comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

How much to budget for an urn

Urns in the Czech Republic are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.

In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[3].

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury

Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in the Czech Republic.

Step by step in the Czech Republic

  1. Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
  2. Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
  3. Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
  4. Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
  5. Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
  6. Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.

Keepsakes, displays and living memorials

An urn doesn't have to be the final resting place. Plenty of people keep the ashes at home for a year or two and then decide to bury them, scatter them or split them further. Choosing an urn that opens easily, with the ashes still in their sealed bag, keeps every one of those choices open.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Which places in the Czech Republic have the widest choice of pet urns?

Usually the largest cities, such as Prague, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.

What should I ask a crematory in the Czech Republic about urns?

Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.

How much does a pet urn cost in the Czech Republic?

Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[2]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

Do crematories in the Czech Republic sell urns?

Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.

Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in the Czech Republic?

No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
