Prague, Czech Republic
Buying an urn locally or online in Prague
The Vltava, Petřín Hill and the forests around Prague are places many families connect with, and some want a memorial that brings them to mind: a stone engraved with a river motif, a photo from a favourite spot, or a small portion of ashes scattered somewhere quiet. Check what rules apply before scattering in a public place, and keep some back if you are unsure.
Dušičky, All Souls' Day on 2 November, is when Czech families light candles on graves, and many quietly light one for a pet too. A candle beside a photo at home, a visit to a pet cemetery on the city's edge, or a moment at the cottage garden can all be part of it. There is no single right memorial; the yearly ritual is often what matters most.
Plenty of people in Prague live in apartments, and that changes the urn question. Shelf space is limited, cats treat bookcases as climbing frames and a heavy marble urn on a floating shelf is a real worry. Families in smaller homes often choose a compact wooden box or a brass urn with a threaded lid, sized closely to the ashes rather than bought a size up. A keepsake on a bedside table can matter more than a large urn on display.
With roughly 1,309,000 residents, Prague is one of the Czech Republic communities we cover.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
With cremation at roughly 85.64%[1] in Czech Republic, many families here have already scattered a relative somewhere meaningful. That experience often shapes what they do for a pet: part of the ashes kept indoors, the rest returned to a beach, a trail or a garden. If that's your plan, buy the urn after the scattering, so it's sized for what's left.
That Czech Republic rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Prague only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for Prague
Wherever you live, the room the urn sits in matters more than the weather outside. Bathrooms and kitchens bring steam and grease, and a spot beside an outside door catches drafts. A shelf in a bedroom, study or living room, out of direct sunlight, keeps most urns looking the way they did the day they arrived.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Keepsakes are where European families in Prague most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[5] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[6] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.

Scattering and burial rules in Czech Republic
If you'd like to bury the urn itself, the material matters for more than looks. A biodegradable urn breaks down within a few seasons, while metal, resin or sealed hardwood stays intact for years, which some cemeteries and landowners prefer and others don't accept. Check before you order. The notes below summarize Czech Republic.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Bring the ashes home as they are. That interim box is closed and secure; they can stay in it as long as you like.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. A partner, a child away at college, a parent in another state: decide before buying anything.
- Work out the capacity you need. Allow about one cubic inch per pound of your pet's healthy weight, or use the urn size calculator.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof before anything is engraved, reading the name letter by letter a second time.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag without opening it, or have the crematory place them in the urn on your behalf.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
With the Czech Republic's human cremation rate above 80 percent, keeping ashes at home or placing them somewhere personal feels natural to many Prague families. For a pet, that might mean an urn on a shelf, a piece of jewellery with a little ash, a framed paw print, or a tree planted at the family cottage. Ask the provider about options before the cremation so portions can be set aside.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Czech Republic?
For people, yes: about 85.64%[1] of Czech Republic deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Prague follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?
Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.
How do I stop a delivered urn from going missing in my building?
Ask the seller to require a signature, have it sent to your workplace or choose a local pickup point. If your building has a package room, let the front desk know a fragile item is coming. Open the box the same day and report any damage straight away, since most sellers set a short window for claims.
How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Prague?
It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[8]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.
What urn suits a small apartment in Prague?
A compact box or a small round metal urn that screws shut usually works in tight spaces, since both fit on a bookshelf and are hard to knock over. Measure the shelf depth and the height between shelves before buying. If a cat climbs the shelves, a small pad of museum putty under the base keeps the urn in place without marking the wood.
