Pet Urns in Prague

Prague, the Czech Republic

Pet Urns in Prague: what to know

A useful way to use the Prague pages is to start with your own town, then look at the largest city nearby. The town page tells you what's typical where you live: how urns reach you and what the weather means for an outdoor memorial. The larger city's page shows what's within a day's drive, such as showrooms, stone workshops and makers who take commissions.

Choosing a pet urn in Prague starts in the same place everywhere: the ashes come home in a plain temporary container, and you decide in your own time what they'll live in. What changes across Prague is the local choice. In the bigger cities, crematories keep display cabinets and independent makers sell at markets; in smaller towns, the vet's crematory catalog and online sellers do most of the work.

How Prague thinks about cremation and urns

Cremation is the usual choice in Prague: about 85.64%[1] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.

We take the Prague percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Prague

Prices for pet urns in the Czech Republic vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[2], so always ask whether the price quoted in Prague includes personalization.

In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[3].

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Prague

Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Prague.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. Answer that and roughly half of what's on sale drops off the list.
  2. For display, pick something whose finish works with the room's light and decor, in a capacity that matches the ashes closely.
  3. For burial, choose a biodegradable urn or a sealed box, and check with the landowner or Prague rules first.
  4. For travel, choose wood or a sturdy container that can pass airport X-ray screening, and carry it in hand luggage.
  5. Order engraving with a written proof; expect a longer wait for photographs or bespoke designs.
  6. Tell us what you're looking for through the contact form, and we'll email options that deliver to Prague.

Remembering your pet, in Prague and beyond

If you'd like part of your pet's ashes outdoors, a quiet corner of your own garden, a favorite walking route (with permission where needed) or a pet cemetery are the usual choices around Prague. Keeping most of the ashes in an urn at home while scattering a little means you never have to choose between the two.

Questions people ask

What should I ask a crematory in Prague about urns?

Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.

Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Prague?

Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.

Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Prague?

It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.

Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Prague?

Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Prague and winter lows near °F in Prague, the right choice depends on where you are.

Do crematories in Prague sell urns?

Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.

How can our family share a pet's ashes across Prague?

Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[7] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
