Cremation customs in France and your pet
A lower cremation rate, about 44.91%[1] in France, means fewer local shops stock urns sized for pets, and fewer engravers and potters have memorial experience. Online sellers fill the gap. If you're commissioning something locally, show the maker a finished urn from a catalog so they understand the size, lid and finish you're after.

There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
In France, human ashes can't be kept at home, but pet ashes can, so a pet urn (urne animale) is a common choice. Most crématoriums animaliers offer a range of urns with individual cremation, and many families order personalized ones online. Scattering on private land needs the owner's agreement; public spaces may have local rules.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, if you can: a clipping of fur or the collar can go into a keepsake later.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label carries your pet's name before putting the box or bag in a calm corner of the house.
- Look at urns slowly, with your pet's weight to hand for the capacity check, and shortlist no more than three.
- Order when you feel settled, not because a countdown on a website says a discount is ending.

Why does the Grenoble page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Lyon to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Lyon (roughly 58 miles from Grenoble) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Grenoble?
