Pet Urns in France: what to know
Buying a pet urn in France is easier than it used to be, with crematory ranges, online sellers and independent makers all delivering nationwide. The trade-offs are delivery time and the risk of damage in transit. Solid wood and metal travel best; ceramic and glass need careful packing.
Across France, keeping a pet's ashes at home is common wherever cremation is. The practical questions are the same in every city: how big the urn needs to be, what material suits the home and climate, and whether any ashes will be shared, scattered or buried. Local rules mostly apply to the last two.
We cover 21 communities in France, from Paris, Marseille and Lyon to smaller towns.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
About 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, and many families still think of a grave as the natural memorial. If that feels right for your pet too, you can have both: cremate, then bury the ashes in an urn in the garden or a pet cemetery, with a small marker on top. It's simpler and less costly than a full burial, and the grave can be dug at any time of year the ground allows.
That France rate is a human statistic published by ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What families in France typically pay for an urn
Prices for pet urns in France vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[2], so always ask whether the price quoted in France includes personalization.
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for France that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[3], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[4]. Most pet crematoria in France sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.
| Urn | Published price | Market |

What France allows with pet ashes
Most families never need to think about rules at all: the urn stays at home, and that's allowed everywhere. If you'd like to scatter or bury some of the ashes in or around France, a quick check with the landowner or the park authority avoids awkward moments. Here's a summary for France.
In France, human ashes can't be kept at home, but pet ashes can, so a pet urn (urne animale) is a common choice. Most crématoriums animaliers offer a range of urns with individual cremation, and many families order personalized ones online. Scattering on private land needs the owner's agreement; public spaces may have local rules.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Leave the temporary container sealed right up until the new urn is in your hands and looked over.
- Read how the urn opens. A wooden urn often has a screwed panel underneath, while a metal one usually unscrews at the top.
- Lay out a towel or tray across a table, with a funnel or spoon within reach should the bag need decanting.
- Place the sealed bag inside and fold the top over. Only open the bag if it truly won't fit.
- Close and secure the urn; a small dab of adhesive on a threaded lid stops curious hands and paws.
- Recycle or keep the temporary box; some families keep it with the certificate as part of the record.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Some families in France put together a small memorial shelf: the urn, a framed photo, a paw print and the tag from their pet's collar. It becomes a place to stop for a moment rather than a shrine. If you'd like a paw print and didn't get one before the cremation, a photo-engraved paw design on the urn itself is a gentle alternative.

Questions people ask
How can our family share a pet's ashes across France?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[6] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
What should I ask a crematory in France about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in France choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in France?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in France?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
