Pet Urns in Ile-de-France: what to know
Across Ile-de-France, one question comes up more often than price or material: what to do when people in the family want different things. One wants the ashes at home, another wants them scattered, a third wants a pendant. The answer is usually all three. Keep the shares small, write down who has what and choose the main urn last.
In Ile-de-France, as elsewhere, the urn is often the memorial families keep longest, sometimes for decades. That's a good reason not to rush it. Choose a material you'll still like in ten years, a lid that closes securely and a size close to the ashes you have. If you'd like a second opinion, send us your pet's details and we'll email some options.

How Ile-de-France thinks about cremation and urns
About 44.91%[1] of people in Ile-de-France are cremated, and many families still think of a grave as the natural memorial. If that feels right for your pet too, you can have both: cremate, then bury the ashes in an urn in the garden or a pet cemetery, with a small marker on top. It's simpler and less costly than a full burial, and the grave can be dug at any time of year the ground allows.
The cremation figure for Ile-de-France comes from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Urns in France are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for France that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[2], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[3]. Most pet crematoria in Ile-de-France sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Most families never need to think about rules at all: the urn stays at home, and that's allowed everywhere. If you'd like to scatter or bury some of the ashes in or around Ile-de-France, a quick check with the landowner or the park authority avoids awkward moments. Here's a summary for Ile-de-France.
In France, human ashes can't be kept at home, but pet ashes can, so a pet urn (urne animale) is a common choice. Most crématoriums animaliers offer a range of urns with individual cremation, and many families order personalized ones online. Scattering on private land needs the owner's agreement; public spaces may have local rules.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Give yourself a week or two, then choose; design decisions come more easily once the earliest days have passed.
- Picture where the urn will sit, and take a tape measure to it: depth of shelf, clearance under a cupboard, room on the mantel.
- Estimate the ashes. Roughly 3-5% of body weight[7] comes back as cremated remains; for a figure based on your own pet, try the ashes weight estimator.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together, then each piece shares one finish.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, windows shut and no draft, and only if the bag really won't pass through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label close by, slipped under the base or filed in a drawer in the same room.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
Keepsakes are how families spread across different cities share one pet. A matching set of small urns, a pendant that holds a pinch of ashes or a glass bead made with a little of them can each travel with a different person. The jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet's ashes can fill.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Ile-de-France choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Ile-de-France?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
How much does a pet urn cost in Ile-de-France?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[2]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Ile-de-France?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Ile-de-France?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Ile-de-France?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
